I've noticed that some people on here have a certain distain for people who like to tune up their car and those who drive with the driving aids switched on.
I kind of understand about the tuning element, since I'm sure you can tune some of the cars to a far greater extent than would be practical in real life. But i'm struggling to see the issue with some of the driver assists. I'll admit it's a bit unrealistic having traction control and ABS on most of the old cars, (although most of the old cars are not fast enough to need them). But a great many modern cars have all these assists fitted as standard. So I don't see that they lessen the realism in any way. You have the choice that a driver would have in the real world. Turn the driver aids on, accept thet the computer interference will slow you down in places, but that you will have more control over the car. Or turn the assists off in order to gain more speed and drive out of the corners, but at the expense of more wayward handling and braking. Even Formula 1 cars used to have Traction Control and ABS.
I suppose i'd rather if they had made the driver assists appropriate to the car.

Well those are my views. But I'd very much like to know what the rest of you guys think.

To modify or not to modify? That is the question.

I personnaly have to modify most of my cars in order to win, and I also have to use abs and traction control on most cars, since my driving skills are not very good. However, I tend to modify my cars less than before, and I am also reducing all the aids gradually, and perhaps that in a few months I'll be able to drive my cars stock and win :-)

It's a two-way street. A lot of people will get all worked up over driving aids, some don't care. Personally, I do what I feel like. I didn't use anything more than ABS on most of the license tests, but in endurance races such as Suzuka, I will run with TCS 1 and ASM. I am not going to rerun an event that long because I flew off the track and lost.

So it's all up to you. Don't listen to others, if that's how they want to drive, let them. It doesn't mean you have to as well, although you will have to if you're racing online and it's a rule.

I usually like to tune my cars with everything but the extreme weight reduction stuff, turbos, and engine mods. Most cars are WAY more fun to drive without the added 400 horsepower.

As far as aids go.. Abs is always on 1.. Traction control is only on 1 with the crazy high hp cars to save on tires (especially when drag racing). I only ever use stability control when I can't beat the race the first time without it (FGT championship). I've never used active steering and I find the grip thing to be useless.

You paid £40 / $60 for the game, play it how you want.

That phrase ends all arguements in online gaming. Enjoy :)

I have no issue with either really, especially with the tuning aspect. Different people have different skill levels and that's fine. Personally, when I host online I switch all assists off, though. To me it's a more genuine racing experience and you are driving the car not the computer. Then again, that's probably why all my real cars are from the 80s. I don't like traction control, ESP, ABS or any of that nanny garbage on my real cars, either.

I also think that the type of controller you're using makes a huge difference in whether or not to run with the assists on.

Good point. Certainly easier for me with the G27 because of the range of controls to run without them. That said, I've played GT since GT1 and used a controller up through GT4 and I've always turned all assists off. It's really just a matter of getting used to it and learning how to control it. Once you do, at least for me, you're quicker without them.

The tuning feature in GT5 is below real life standards so to speak. I Nissan GT-R R34 for instance can only get around 800hp in the game, where in real life you can relatively easy mash them up to 1000+hp. And you are not able to turbo or supercharge cars like BMWs, Lambos, Ferraris etc. but it has been done in real life. In real life you can piratically get as much power out of an engine as you like, it will just wear down quickly, but with the right components the limit is far, far away from the limit on the game. Also in the game you cannot attach more then one turbo and/or supercharger on one engine, where in real life you can have multiple turbos to reduce turbo lag, or a supercharger and turbocharger combination which also keeps the torque going no matter then revs. Also in real life you can do engine, drivetrain swaps, so you can make a 4WD BMW for instance, i don't know why you would want to do that, but it would be possible. Or make a 4WD car RWD only or FWD only, which actually is relatively easy to do in real life.

Well said, too many people worried about what others are doing.like it's life or death.enjoy the game how you want to play it.

I personally buy, repair, fully modify and tune all of my cars. I believe in Maxiumum performance no matter what. As well I only use 1 abs with all other driving aids turned of to get the best out of each of my cars. You can check out my tuning garage in the tuning section under MaxPerformance Tuning Garage.

'Normal' A-Spec: No.
Seasonal A-Spec Events: If I have to.
B-Spec: Yes.
Online: Yes.

I almost drive a 4wd all the time. So I don't need TC, but on RWD I use it.
But since 2 weeks im mounting dildo wings on my RWD cars so they won't
oversteer. And on FWD is don't use it because I like the burnouts that they make.

Ps. Im not mounting a dildo wing on every RWD cars, only on the ugly ones.

I race without aids (except for ABS as Im faster with it) just because it is more fun for me ... I'm not bothered what others do, even if people want to use Skid Recovery Force, it is more fun when I still beat them lol :P

I run with a DS3 and leave TC and ABS on the default settings. I'd love to not be so dependent, but I don't have the mad ninja skills required to run a loose FR car with a dualshock and no aids.

SRF is always off and grip reduction is always real though.

Just like real life then, I mean, who does like them Ricers and hot rodders :D

I can run cars such as the Corvette ZR-1 C6 RM / Zonda R / Mazda 787B etc. etc. around the ring with a DS3 with only ABS on without problems ... Stop using the controller as an excuse and learn to drive!

I have to agree with this. It's really not that hard to control some of these cars with a controller. I actually enjoy cars that are very loose. I think I am one of few who loves driving the BTR and Yellow Bird. I always play with all assists off and ABS on 1, but that's just me.

You are certainly one of the few, lol. I can't get those bitches to go in a straight line in neutral let alone trying to accelerate.

I tune all the cars the way I would want them in real life (as much as the game will allow).

the only cars I use with assists are the GT F1 (almost all assist on for that car)
enzo with TC at 5 and ABS at 6, all other cars I use no assists

with the endurance races I just do intake and exhaust upgrades so the race will be somewhat close and not boring.

Personally I feel as though i bought i'll use what i want, just because i use the aids or tune all the cars i use doesn't mean i can't do it without(seeing as i can and have in online races). I kept most things on default, although i lower my TCS down to 2 or 3 as it will give ya more speed and save tires for endurance races.

I'm very sure it also depends how you use the controller.
With the sticks or triggers its easier to apply the right amount of power and braking.
But I can't drive using those (for accelerating/braking) for the life of me.
And I tried! In fact, I played through Dirt 2 using the sticks and triggers pretty well, but they just dont work for me in GT.

Unless I'm very conservative on the corner exits, high powered rear-wheel-drive cars are hard for me to push. So occasionally I will use TC with that. And ABS for most cars too.
