I currently own a Samsung Galaxy S2 i777 with Android 4.0.4 ICS.

Lately, I've been getting many issues, such as random shut downs. It won't switch on till I take off the battery.

I've been researching the Android forums, and people suggested that the best solution is to actually downgrade back to 2.3.6 Gingerbread.

The reason why I am posting this in GTPlanet is to get your opinion as well, as I know that there is a wealth if informative people who know about these things here :).

Now, my main question is, how would I do this? I do not want to root it in any way shape or form now, but the apparent way is to root it first, and then download the firmware?

I had an Samsung galaxy 1, that I had upgraded to a custom ICS mod for a while, then ended up going back because of stability and battery life.

I did my research here http://forum.xda-developers.com/

They have separate forums for most phones, and you can ask your questions there as those guys deal with that stuff all the time.

As long as you get all the right files (you need a couple things on your pc to do the downgrade) it's a pretty painless operation.

Probably once you have everything you need, it takes about 10-20 minutes to update the OS on your phone.

It might not be possible to put your phone down to gingerbread. More than likely you would be. If you like ICS than you might be able to go to a custom rom that runs a little better on your phone.

Both my android phones (Droid Charge & Galaxy nexus) run custom roms that I found on the xda-developers site.

Having owned a Galaxy S II (T989) i'm kind of curious on whether you considered instead of downgrading to gingerbread, why not try out jellybean?

As Infinital-NG pointed out, there's a lot of information over at the XDA forum. If your SII is bone stock, maybe some, if not all, of the issues could be fixed with one of the custom roms that are available there. Be weary though as your mileage may vary from chef to chef and even then from rom to rom (A Chef being a developer).

If you do consider upgrading to jellybean, read the feeback on each rom thread you're interested in (I usually start from the last page and work my way back since the ones on the last page usually reflect the latest build update to that rom) before actually flashing it to your phone. That saves a lot of headache, heart attacks, broken phones and possible a hole in a wall (or door) down the road.

As far as needing to root it before flashing..I wish I could help you but i'm not sure how accurate I would be. As far as my SII went, I don't remember rooting it. I do remember unlocking the bootloader via ODIN (at least I think that's how I did it) and then flashing a custom build onto it which was pre-rooted. I say this is inaccurate because I think I was intoxicated at the time of doing it..or something.

Anyways, hopefully this helps somehow!

This does help! Thank you :)

However, has the official version of Jellybean come out for the S II? AT&T had pushed out a quick update relatively recently, which was 4.0.4. The reason why I am downgrading it back to Gingerbread is because I had heard that the S2 best works with Gingerbread.

Last time I checked, I think it was pushed back to late this year. I'm not up to date with it though. As far as official builds go yeah the Gingerbread build is indeed the most stable but i'd highly recommend at least giving custom builds a shot before going to gingerbread. This is obviously my personal opinion though. It eventually comes down to you on whether you're willing to give it a shot or not :p

JB for the S2 has just begun seeding, but it's only for the international S2 (GT-I9100) at the moment, but Everybody else will be getting their respective firmware launch date very soon!

Scroll down this link a little, and there is a Status list. It will change from pending to available once the update goes live in your respective country :)
