Was watching TV the other day. Some news channel, and they had a report on how car corporations were becoming afraid of losses due to the decreasing interest of motorsports in america. And on the same day I was reading an article in Automobile magazing that explained how they want to bring drifting into the US as a major sports. I see this as the car manufacturer's best way to increase sales and interest in motorsports. What do you think?

sounds about correct. i think its a good thing though. US doesnt have enough drifting. most of the people i talk to about cars dont fully understand wut drifting is or how to perform this amazing feat. they just talk about fixing up cars not really knowing wut each individual modification really does to the car. wutevers. at least there are some who do know, i talk to them.

i think drifting is good for car manufacturers. drift session has been in hawaii for a couple years. and it's amazing how much progression there is. now about 2500 people come out to watch. and according to option 2 magazine, hawaii is the best place in america to drift!!! whoooo!

the only downside is that no one really drifts new cars, most drift old 240 fastbacks or hatchi's. so the manufacturers arent making money from drifting, but if the US was to bring back the 240 fastback like japan did.... :)

For American's manufactures that idea will make them lose (money and sales), bacause: how many drifting cars are a viper, camaro, transam............???? they are japanese (imports). I'm not american, but if I were an american manufacter I'll be really worried 'cos young people'll buy imports not my cars. :)

alot of S15's are being used for drifting, nissan must make a bit from it

drifiting isn't HUGE. its a small small group of people who know aboot it. i think more people are into the whole quarter mile thing...

In Spain there are groups of burning rubber

in my country (jordan but i live in can),you dont see many modified imports, all you see is modded bmw and all they do is drifting and rally, its cool there and im going this summer there so we will be drifting im dad's M5,i cant wait:D

Burning rubber, Americans can understand and appreciate. But drifting? Sorry. It's destined to be a subset of the Import Car Culture, at best. It may stir a brief flurry of wider interest, but don't expect it to be bigger than that. Sorry to rain on your parade.

Oval/circle track racing has a long history in America, as does drag racing. Both will always be popular here. Rally is making some inroads. Sports car racing has waxed and waned throughout American MS history. It's actually making a slight upswing right now, but it will only take a few more sanctioning-body squabbles to bring it down again.

But drifting - a sport that's all about technique and not much about going fast - just isn't going to capture the American attention in a big way.

Yeah, but practically all you have now is the same 250 lap left turn competition and demolition rallys. We need something new...

competitive drifting has a lot to do with speed actually. in competitions competitors get judged not only on their drift angle, but on how fast they enter and exit the turn. I think drifting has a chance at gaining mainstream popularity because it appeals to a different audience then nascar and ihra does. drifting is a judged sport whereas racing is not. since there is more show involved, spectators have more to get excited about.

I think most people would rather see some tail-happy drift machines barely missing the wall than ass-ugly race cars going in a circle for hours on end.

drifting sounds cool, but then it will be the new RICE thing of america. instead of rice altezza lights it will be falken and nissan stuff. like SR20DET will be popular. i just dont agree with drifitng in the US. might be to RICE!:banghead:

Well first off..When it comes to drifting..America sucks as a whole..So I don't think the need for drift prepped cars is quite neccesary....I Do however think the market for small/midsized RWD cars will be growing..And you'll see the S2000's sales increase...Other than that....It'll more than likely remain the same for the next 3-4 years

I said increase buddy....And the Silvia Series ended in 2002 Along with the Supra, the Skyline, and the FD3S Rx-7....

no ive read somewhere an article of the S16 and there was even a pic and maybe it will be 280HP

And I've seen pictures of the New Supra...And the new GTR R35 Skyline And the Rx9 and the 4000gt.....Guess how many will EVER hit production?....And as far as 280HP...Why and how?..Will it no longer have a SR20DET...If it doesn't screw it...

Holy crap! You get Automobile magazine?! I thought I was the only person who recieved that magazine! :p I read that article on drifting (2-3 pages right?) and I thought it was very good. I think that drifting in beginning to get big in America. Almost every magazine about import cars has some for of drifting article/feature in it. I just picked up the new Turbo magazine yesterday and there was a feature on drifting in it. I havnt read it yet, but I will tonight.
