Drifting Smoothly, am I doing the wrong thing?

When I enter drifts in my modified Mazda Rx-7 for some reason I need never countersteer like a maniac, a few taps on the gas and bango, instant sideways action. Sometimes I have to countersteer a *little* but not always. Is this normal?
 
you dont necessarily need to drift with a wheel
i for one use the dual shock two
and i can drift properly
it's all about control and practice
 
Oh, sorry. I was assuming you had a wheel. Wait for someone that uses the DS2 to answer this question...
 
it depends?, if u use the d-pad (buttons) a few taps is all you need and its fine, cause the d-pad works like a circuit breaker, when you tap it , it turns full lock and a few taps should make it sweet around the corner, but if u wanted a showy effective and cool looking drift, analog is the way to go, because you can hold the analog stick a quarter or half way or 3 quarters (whatever is needed) and it shouldn't effect your drift badly, it should infact help it (but this means more power is needed for the car), so to answer your question yes it is very normal, but countersteer is the best way to go...
 
Well then the car needs to be addapted to it too, if you like to countesteer more offcourse, settings: neg toe at the back, stabilizer in front should be higher than the rear. That's all it took for me to get a real oversteering RX-7, IMO it's more fun that way:tup:
 
well, seeing that my DFP is broken, ive had to use my DS2, dont worry, i have the same thing, i never need to countersteer all that much. my angles arent the same as they were back in GT3, but if its bugging you, go for a deeper angle..

What you're doing is no-countersteer FR drifting, which in truth, isn't drifting, its merely a controlled powerslide, (yes, there's a difference). But luckily it shouldn't be too hard to change a few settings on your car to turn into a real driftmobile--try taking the rear camber down, and put the rear toe at -1.

Same thing happen to me when i jus started drifting. I would always practice on Trial Mountain but i realized i am not counter-steering on some of the turns(90 degree turns). So if you want to drift, switch to Tsukuba or Deep Forest, i found that it is a great place to practice your counter-steering.

Haveing to counter-steer, is something that happens in almost and drift that is executed. With out counter steering, you car will crash.

There is a technique that is used when you take a certin line, where there is no counter steering needed, and you car is controled by proper gas and breaking at certin points in a turn.
 
Okay, I lied. Many times I have to countersteer. But sometimes I never need to do so. Now that I know I need to reduce oversteer I"ll go about fixing this. :dunce:

i never said that you dont need to counter-steer, to me drifting with out counter-steering is nothing more than a control powerslide. Thus i started to practice on U-Turns on Deep Forest so that my drifts actually looks like a drift and not a powerslide.

that i know, but u can only do it on 90 degree turns and not on long corners or u-turns.

90 degree drifts are very unrealistic in the drifting world.. Unlike GT3, GT4's engine is much more complex.. The only time you would see a 90 degree drift would be a small turn IE: a hairpin probally .

and dont forget AWD! :D ive come pretty close to 90 degrees, usually as a result of linking turns or heavy feinting.

i said 90-degree turns like a "L" turn not 90 degree drifts.
 
no, u only use the e-brake to break traction or to correct a drift. you steer with the steering wheel. in zero counter, you still have to steer but very minimal.

i managed to drift the deepforest hairpin with zero countersteer in gt3. the car just had enough grip to exit properly wihtout countersteer.

that is GT3 not GT4, you cant pull that off anymore in GT4, unless its a "L" turn.

and if you plan to drift a "U" turn by entering at an low angle and just flooring it thru so that you will gain angle, you would still need to counter-steer to keep your car from spinning out.

You can do it with MR & RR cars. It's just tricky to get right, throttle control is the key. The weight in the rear will naturally rotate the car around a corner, the heavy ass will make you catch traction at the right point if your throttle input is just right. It's not impossible, its just not easy. I suppose you can do it with an FR also, but getting that heavy of lift-off oversteer with a FR would probably require some ballast adjustments.

miata's do it quite well from stock, actually.

But ya, zero-counter is possible with fr's and mr's. It is a fast approach if done properly and in a controlled fashion due to the decreased angle that is held. So if you're going for exhibition drifts, you could probably stand to ignore this technique - FR's and MR's will get more angle with countersteering.

Like DTC alluded to, some cars need more persuasion than others to pull it off.
If you plan on doing it, line choice is very important, since you wont be using any steering to correct it once you get going.

and ya, this technique is easier on a DS2 b/c steering snaps back to 0 very fast - unlike a wheel.

yeah, gt3 is heaps different to gt4. i'll try and get a vid up sometime. it was in a ae86 with around 150hp. i guess it gripped up at the exit, requiring no countersteer, bcos it doesnt have enough power.

i mite try the same settings for the car in gt4 and see how that turns out
