hi guys :)

i wanna know

is it easy to drift with a controller

cuz i cant afford the g25 or g27 :ouch:

help plz :guilty:

Hello, and welcome to GTPlanet. Two things to mention:

Try searching on the Drift board for "controller" and see what turns up. I'm sure you'll find some information. Although I don't drift, it seems to me it would probably be easier because you can make large corrections very quickly, which you can't do with a wheel.

Also, please use proper capitals and spelling - avoid words like "wanna" and "cuz" and "plz". It only takes a moment to spell out the whole word, and it helps keep the quality of information here to a higher level.

Thanks.

I personally am a controller drifter, and I wouldn't call it easy, but I was able to keep up with the better drifters in wheels after like a month or two of practice with them. It's just a matter of getting used to it..

Controller users will find it harder with a wheel, and wheel users will find it harder to drift with a controller.

IMO, controller is ok, but not as fun or realistic feeling as a wheel. Wheel feels more exciting to countersteer and gives me more of a rush like real-life drifting, although I still enjoy controller drift if i can't be bothered setting up wheel/pedals or if people are sleeping as wheel makes annoying noise.

Drifting with a controller is still good though and it's not too difficult provided you know the basics of drifting techniques. I find changing the controller layout so that L2 = BRAKE, R2 = ACCELERATE helps, as it allows better throttle and brake control than X and square buttons and you can still brake and accelerate at same time (heel-toe) which you can't do with right analogue stick as accel-up, brake-down. Since i no longer require right analogue stick for accel/brake I re-assigned gear changes to shift up-UP (right analogue stick) and shift gear down-DOWN on right analogue stick. I think this set-up is kinda cool as it makes ACCEL/BRAKE setup more like a real car (side by side and depressed to activate) and gear change feels more like sequential shift rather than paddle gearbox.

If you want a wheel but can't afford the newer ones like G25, perhaps look into old PS2 ones? I have a Logitech driving force EX (seen below) I used for PS2, it had regular PS2 controller plug plus USB plug. I plugged it into PS3 (USB plug) to see if it would work with GT5P and it seemed to work fine.

I have a G25 I use for racing.

To get used to the controller, I started drifting with the controller.
I recently (04/05/2010) did: NSX Eiger Nordwand Reverse 14755 points

I'm certainly not the best, LR-L2L-iSlide uses a controller and does things like:
599 Eiger Nordwand Reverse 23951 points

Drifting with a controller is ok to start with, but I find it is much easier with a wheel once you get used to it. The accuracy with a wheel is also way better, both with the steering and throttle control. If you can't afford a G25 or G27, try looking for a DFGT or DFP second hand. They should both be under $100.

yes its easier with a controller, since you can achieve maximum counter steer with a flick of the analog stick that you can't on a wheel especially with 900 degree steering like g25/27. even if you download the replay of top scorers online, you will notice that they are controller users.

steering wheel can only give you precision and realism. used in exhibitions, and precision drifting like in d1 gran prix where you drift side by side with the opponent scoring system.

if you want the scores, use the controller.
if you want the real thing(almost), get the wheel.

thanks guys
i really appreciate your help
but i'll stick to the controller and save the money for gt5
but since im a beginner
what the best car to drift ( with sittings please ) & the best track
thanks alot guys ^^

yes a lot of the top drivers use controller because they can change direction a lot faster i my self use logitech EX not because its cheaper than G25 G27 but because its 180 degrees i can go lock to lock faster

is your wheel have clutch

drifting with handbrake isnt good really

try to move the car left and right until it lose the traction 👍

Agree that working with weight transfer, throttle and shifting is best and nicest way to drift. But I do have some cars where a bit of control with the handbrake to correct gives a better experience.

Im not really a drifting expert, but I saw some drifting on tv the other day, and they said handbrake was the way to go and scandinavian flic wasnt real drifting

I've heard it's easier to drift with a wheel than with a pad though... :D

Moving the car left and light before entering a corner is a good thing to slide the car to prepare to drift, I've heard. Just using the handbrake to do it can cause a hit on the barrior I guess.. And also not fun :(

Actually it is and it's called feint or weight transfer, atleast if you get enough angle to your slide, which is easier to obtain with handbrake especially at slow speeds. I personally prefer this scandinavian flic, because I'm scandinavian, no really because it's easier to initiate the drift with it by using G25, there's something missing you know, e-brake handle. I press G25's circle button of course if get understeer, or my cars stop drifting in the middle of a corner.

But every technique that makes your car slide is drifting. The reason why they prefer to use handbrake in D1 for example is that they can throw their cars into wider angle faster to start show drift where wheels sping very fast and is lot of smoke. And when there is a corner where you need to dynamically adjust your drift, normally with braking and/or lift-off drift, but again they prefer handbrake in D1 and in other competitions just to get more angle to their drift and get more points from judges. Scandinavian flic is great way to initiate the drift in S-turns, where you continue drifting with power slide on the straigt away.

Can not be that new, when I look at the statistics on drifting pro mode:

Rank Points Driver
1 10912501 Up England F-L-U-F-F-Y-
2 8592544 Stable Japan X-neko-X
3 7924002 Up United States controller LR LR-SWD-007

You see that you are on the top = most total points all cars and tracks together.
and indeed a lot of controllers confirmed in the top ranks.
Oldest entry from you 18/11/2009, so indeed only good 7 months.

Quite good performances there:

thank you Vince Fiero nice to have a compliment ,its a lot of hard work though ,i should of learnt with controller i would get bigger scores but it is more fun with sterring wheel

im not against the wheel , in fact, i want one. im drifting with the control and ive hit 23000 ENReverse all about what you get used to

i´m a controller drifter and i can get easily under the top 100 with a few tries, when i have enough time, i´m also able to get under top 50 ranking
