Okay, here's a couple of lines on how I think each driver's going this year. Doubtless there'll be disagreements (eh, Giles?), which is good, I was intending this as a kick-off for discussion.

M Schumacher
Driving as well as ever and as long as Ferrari maintain their technical advantage it’s hard to see him losing the title in the near future. I tip he’ll win seven titles and then retire

Barrichelllo
Has looked a lot more confident this year and at the risk of stating the obvious thoroughly deserved the win at Austria bar team orders. Failures have denied him the chance to really shine but has shown himself to be far superior to Eddie Irvine. Consistency still not quite there but much improved. I think he has a seat there for some time to come – possibly as long as Schumacher’s there.

Montoya
Tyres have clouded his performances in races but has shown natural speed in qualifying. I have been a little disappointed in him but he has shaded Ralf.

R Schumacher
Ralf has shown a fair degree of petulance over the last twelve months, something you’d never see from his brother – seems to be unable to deal with Montoya. I think, especially after the ‘sharpen up’ comments from Frank last week he might only have one or two seasons left at Williams – there’s too many fast young things coming up through the ranks.

Raikkonen
The last guy who looked so natural in the top 6 was Michael. It’s his SECOND season! Future world champion, for sure – and I like the fact that he’s grumpy!

Coulthard
Has shown flashes of brilliance but I think unless something special happens next year might be his last at McLaren.

Button
Has shaded Trulli and made the Renault look good on occasions. Is getting better and more consistent (he’s only 22!) and it will be interesting to see how he goes at BAR next year.

Trulli
Hasn’t seemed particularly inspired this year. I think Renault got rid of the wrong driver, personally, but that’s Briatore for you!

Fisichella
Consistency is a bit up and down as always but you have to wonder how many team-mates Giancarlo has to beat before he gets a decent drive. I personally think he’s going to end up the new Jean Alesi – so much promise, wasted…

Sato
Has probably gone at it too hard this year after showing so much promise in British F3 – a year test driving for BAR (if that’s where he ends up) would really do him the world of good. I still rate him as a talent.

Heidfeld
Has been particularly cool with another young team-mate this year and although Sauber aren’t where they were last year has been pretty solid. He’s due for a step up

Massa
Naturally fast but stepped into F1 too early. Would do well with a couple of seasons of F3 under his belt. His display at Monaco was one of consummate immaturity.

Villeneuve
Well, he’s probably re-signed for another season at BAR – and I think is now resigned to never winning another championship. I personally think he’s on cruise and collect.

Panis
If he’s the one on the move from BAR, where is he going? Toyota perhaps? Hard to tell how he’s going when the car’s so poor.

Frentzen
Has shown good speed when the car’s (and the team!) been up to it.

Bernoldi
Hardly seen this year – the incident with Massa at Monaco was about the only time he’s been sighted. Another has-been/never was.

Salo
Has had the Toyota in some interesting places this year (like two sixth places!), but very hard to judge given the inconsistency of the car. Does seem to have driven well.

McNish
Again, hard to judge given the newness of the team, the inconsistency of the car, and that he's got to learn all the tracks - not to mention a run of bad luck that would make Barrichello angry. Has looked pretty good at times, enough to suggest he might be worth another season (which sadly I don't think will happen).

Irvine
Ford's highest paid employee looks to be on 'cruise and collect' and with the car so bad who can blame him?

de la Rosa
I know the Jag's bad but it can't be good for your career to have a rookie in a Minardi start in front of you every other grand prix.

Webber
Has shown maturity and speed, I think he’s only had one DNF that was his fault (and that was with a clutch problem) at the British GP. Someone must pick him up – he’s quick and cheap to run (unlike Sato!)

Yoong
Entirely out of his depth. Expect him to be replaced before the next GP.

You missed Salo and McNish!

I disagree with surprisingly little actually - probably something to do with the fact that we've been speaking about this all season.

I don't see Michael staying for a seventh title - I think he'll retire at the end of next year.

Ralf needs a kick up the backside, but I've never really thought he was any good, right from his "let's see how many times we can spin in a weekend" Jordan days. He's being well and truly found out now, isn't he? I bet BMW are upset about the fact that they're bankrolling him - according to the rumours, anyway.

Eddie: Please go. Go now!

I'm not sure I agree about Jacques. I think he'll have to try a lot harder next year - the first year with a Willis-designed car, new team boss will have got things into shape by then, new team-mate eager to show himself to be the future World Champ. He has had it too easy for too long though. BTW, on Mike Gascoyne front, does anyone know what the "specific, limited, three month task" he's doing is?

Massa needs to remember that sideways=slow, and that he's not driving a rally car.

That's all for now, probably think of more later. Up to my ears in mail server problems at the moment! :)

It's Eddie Jordan who is known as the Ulster Man, right, maybe Irvine also ( I think someone is). If it applies to Irvine you could say "Ouster the Ulster Man." :)

did someone from ferrari make a comment that went sort of like this "we would like to have fischella with a ferrari under him at some point in his career." ???

So, how does the driver market look like ending up? Given that it looks like a certainty Webber is going to Jaguar, where is Irvine going - is he going to Jordan or will he give it away? Where will Panis end up - Toyota? Sato - test driving for BAR? Who gets the second seat at Minardi? What's going to happen to Arrows and its two seats? What's going to happen to Massa and his seat at Sauber?

Driver market: My predictions.

You're not allowed to slag me off for this in six months time if it's all wrong!!!!

Ferrari: Michael Schumacher, Rubens Barrichello (both confirmed)
Williams: Juan-Pablo Montoya (all-but confirmed), Ralf Schumacher (confirmed)
McLaren: Raikkonen, Coulthard (BC)
Renault: Trulli, Alonso (BC)
Sauber: Heidfeld (option on team's side, likely to be confirmed), Panis
BAR: Button (confirmed), Villeneuve (coming soon)
Jaguar: Webber, de la Rosa (not sure if DLR is confirmed)
Jordan: Fisichella, Hmm. May just keep Sato
Arrows: Frentzen, Bernoldi (assuming Red Bull buyout completed)
Minardi: Peesh. Who knows?! Perhaps Sebastian Bourdais.
Toyota: Salo, McNish (Salo has a contract, but the option is on the team's side, McNish does not have a contract, but the rumours are saying that Toyota would have to pay handsomely if he is not racing in F1 next year).

On the Toyota thing, I think it would be the dumbest thing on Earth if they changed their drivers. McNish has the luck of Johnny Herbert, only much much more talent, and Salo's a half-reasonable peddler.

I would put money on Arrows not being Arrows next year, and if that's the case, they would be sensible to pay Frentzen's wage bill, since he's good, and they would need some on-track stability. Assuming the buyer is Red Bull, they'll keep Bernoldi, who isn't as bad as everyone makes out. If you watch the video of him vs Massa at Monaco, Bernoldi is really patient, and keeps the thing off the walls. He's no future world champion, but I reckon he'd beat the likes of Irvine, Trulli, Sato etc in equal equipment.

More later when I think of it...

What do you make of the Jordan Ford report on the Autosport website this morning? If it's true it would take Toyota out of the picture for 2004 - and budget wise it may indeed mean Sato stays for next year, I suppose.

Ford-Jordan?

Interesting. It would make sense for Jordan to keep Sato if Ford aren't bothered about influencing driver choice. I'd love to see the commercial issues there. Remember that it cost BMW $40m to make "Williams BMW" into "BMW.Williams"!

And even more if they go ahead with the plan to drop the Williams name entirely next year.

If that happens I'd expect Webber to go to Jaguar in a straight swap for a small amount of cash and maybe this years Cosworths as a supply.

Incidentally, PDLR has a contract but that doesn't perhaps mean a thing. Irvine could easily head to Jordan to appease B+H but I don't really see that happening.

Hey Dud! Haven't seen you here for a while!

I couldn't remember if DLR had a contract or not. Of course, these things don't mean anything, but Jaguar would do well to keep him, don't you agree?

Would B&H want Irvine? Would anyone? God, if I was his mother I would deny all knowledge...

Dont' ask me., I think it's a british thing although Justin Wilson would be a better bet IMO. Especially if you're keeping Fisi for experience.

Well, knowing Eddie Jordan, everything's potentially for sale! Agree on Sato - there is definite talent there (you don't win a British F3 title like that with no talent) and he's starting to show signs of coming good.
