I know theres some cool setups with a racing seat and a metal frame for your steering wheel that sell for 800 bucks, but lately ive been wanting a cheap solution to making a similar setup.

Anyone have any ideas on how to acomplish this with regular household materials, or have ideas on how to build somethings thats portable, small and sturdy?

You cant really race with the wheel on your lap, so i hope someone out there has some ideas on how to create a comfortable setup where you can enjoy your steering wheel infront of your livingroom tv :)

I mean you can really start to look like a dork playing gran turismo if you have a racing seat with a huge metal frame in the middle of you living room :dopey:
 
You could just attach it to a small desk.
 
Yeah you can do that. But I think what SkillRacer is saying is that to have the 'full' GT experience you really need some kind of cockpit setup.

I can get good quality FIA approved race seats at a very very good price, but unfortunately it wouldn't go down too well if my living room resembled the cockpit out of Tommi Makkinen's Subaru. I'm all for it though, you understand!

If I had the space I would be seriously tempted about buying a full cabinet from somewhere like here...

I'm planning on making a similar setup to the Logitech pro fighter model thingy (the "official" racing cockpit of GT4). I figured the whole thing would cost me around $200, the most expensive parts being the seats. I just hope aluminum tubing won't be that expensive. I'll post some pics and diagrams once I get it made. I'm going to be working on it over my xmas break, in time for my next semester. So hopefully I'll have something in two weeks.
 
hehe :) I built my own small cockpit using a seat from 92 civic and some woodwork. it does its job very well and feels good but i plan to upgrade it and make it more like a real car .. somday :D
 
Any other links. I want to stick with what I have for the seat, i need to do something else for mounting the wheel...don't want my living room cumbersome due to the stools turned upside down with the board. Any suggestions?

Tire and Seat are perfect...and was cheap. The tire actaully gives it good suspension...it rubber.
 
You can bust out the ironing board..heh. Hey is the wheel's forcefeedback too strong at times? Does it wobble or move the board you have mounted onto?

the shelf board is pretty study and heavy, so the force feedback doesn't over power it at all.
 
I used a small night table, and put lots of books in it to keep it heavy to the ground. It works well w/ the force feed back.
 
My parents found a used low stool at a garage sale that I now use to secure my wheel. I then sit on a low lawn chair (not the hard plastic ones) that my parents bought at the same garage sale. It's surprisingly comfy...this I know cos I played over 10+ of NFS Underground the other day (rented).

There is this small table from Ikea (it's pretty much a cube in size, approx. 50cm x 50 x 50) that I originally wanted to use for the wheel. I think it's offered pretty much worldwide in the Ikea stores.
