Hi,

Just got myself a new (used) DFGT wheel, and as expected, my driving is not yet up to par to what I used to do with a DS3.

I'm seeking tips for:

handling cars.

physical setup - what would be the cheast alternative to a Ikea baby high chair on where I have to put a floor piece underneath so the clamps do not slide. I was eventually looking for a foldable laptop tray or a TV dinner table, what do you think.

Preferred view for handling the car( i.e. Cockpit mode , bumper mode 3rd person etc.)

some settigs for the feedback?

Thanks

Preferred view for handling the car, try each one that suits you.
It would be better to place you post here Sim Racing Hardware if your talking about your physical setup.

i have to say, no matter the control scheme, GT's roof camera is the ONLY camera

it is attached to the car, so you can visually see every bump, & the FOV is good other than certain cars that are on the hood for some reason

the worst thing a camera can do is start turning or shaking, which is what in car & bumper do (especially that option in shift 2 where it looks into the turn, throwing your brain way off)

the second worst thing a camera can do is if it lacks inertia in third person, which is what GT does... extremely jarring, if your car is slipping for example, the whole 'world' is spinning around awkwardly rather than following the car like a helicopter which is what pretty much every other game correctly does

@hall90 has kindly provided a useful link to the sim racing hardware section of the site which contains a list of all the hardware that is available.

I'll quickly share with you my thoughts - I bought a Logitech DFGT just after GT5 first came out and having spent, the at the time frighteningly high sum of, £80 on the wheel I was determined to get the cheapest stand possible so I bought a Black and Decker Workmate replica (Workmans collapsible bench) for £15 and set about modifying it to turn it into a driving rig. Despite being pretty handy with DIY projects the result was a disaster! I cannot stress strongly enough that you must avoid the cheapest solution and must get a good stand onto which to mount your wheel - it will cost more than a secondhand DFGT, but will be so worth it in terms of comfort, suitability and savings on chiropractor, osteopath and other medical bills!

Eventually I bought a Wheelstand Pro for my DFGT and my comfort was transformed. You need not a cheap stand, but one which can be adjusted to place the wheel at exactly the right height and angle to suit you and the chair or sofa which you sit. I have used this type of stand and have at least a dozen friends who also use this make who have not had any problem with it. The bottom of the stand is covered in high spec rubber which does not slip on solid wood or carpet floors. The metal tubes are finished to a standard far above anything I have seen in other stands - not surprising as the primary product by the company is precision parts for hydraulic rams - the stands are made as a sideline because the Company bosses enjoy sim-racing.

Onto the subject of driving tips - my advice is: now that you have a wheel, switch off the driving aids apart from ABS set to 1 (you shouldn't need aids with a wheel and it will be much more enjoyable). Start the game again from the beginning - to avoid cheating consider starting a new profile so you have to redo everything - I guarantee that by the time you complete the game you will be better on the wheel than you used to be on the DS3. It does however take time to make the transition - how long varies according to how good you were with a DS3. I have some friends who were quicker on a wheel within two hours while for others who were very good on a hand controller it took several months.

One key thing - never pick up a hand controller again to race (you can after you have successfully made the transition, but even then it is best to save the controller just for photo mode). This is also one of the reasons why it is essential to have a stand which is convenient (quick and easy to fold if necessary) and so comfortable to use that eventually it wouldn't even enter your head to pick up a hand controller again - I don't even use mine for photomode!

Finally - before ordering your stand consider whether you will be upgrading to a PS4 compatible wheel in the future - if so buy one which already fits the next wheel or which can be cheaply upgraded to fit that next wheel in the future.

I only started using my DFGT not too far into 2015 after owning it for a few years a boy what a change after years of a controller. With handling cars just keep practicing driving all types in all conditions; from mid engine tail happy super cars, nippy front wheel drives, balanced FR's or 4WD's. You'll pick it up eventually, when I first started up I just practiced racing without any aids and in manual and from that point on I was always learning, from starting off with the basics and being way slower than myself on a controller to being unbeatable against the controller me, to being as precise as possible on the gas and break to get the most out of my laps.

As for physical setup, find whats comfortable. A set up would definitely help out but if thats a bit hard to get improvise, I use a coffee table thats too low and a chair that's a bit too high but I deal with it and still enjoy using it.

Preferred view, mine is bumper since I used it in GT3,4,5. But it's personal preferance.

As for settings on the DFGT I use sim (I don't think it makes a difference but still) and 10,10 for FFB settings.

Good luck! It's a fun experience learning to use the wheel and the DFGT is a great entry level wheel.
Some day when you're confident you should try an online series such as @NW48 's newest series. Or when ATCC season 3 starts up. I'd recommend starting up on one of those someday considering how well they are setup and ran.

I then tried to start from scratch ( i had a old test accounton my ps3 installed) and decided to play the game only with the wheel. I am amazed how fast thing catches up. I mean, I was having fun and I have found the best settings for my taste quite fast, and I was able to "Gold" most B licences test in a single try. I have one left that require gold to be 15.800 and I had 15.801!!!)

raced in the Fit and in the 86 15th anniversary so far
