Cross your fingers: Audi RS4 Convertible may be headed to US

In the long list of toys that Europe gets to play and the US doesn't, Audi's RS4 Avant and RS4 Cabriolet have got to be somewhere near the top. However, Automobile magazine has been told by an Audi product planner that the droptop RS4 could soon become a US citizen.

The convertible top is electro-hydraulic, opens in 21 seconds at speeds up to 18 mph, and features a heated glass rear window. And just like the sedan and wagon, the cab is lowered 30 mm compared to the regular A4. As well as the being distinguished by the lack of a top, the cab comes with standard with the sports seats instead of the RS buckets. That would make sense for the buyers who don't intend to use their RS4 for anything other than boulevard duty -- but we're not sure they deserve an RS4. Without a roof one would think you'd drive it just as hard since there's nothing but wind between you and the bellow of 420 hp through twin pipes -- but that's just us. The price would be $70,000 and change.

* yawn *

I could think of better cars to spend $70K on (besides the Z06) than this, and the list starts with the 'regular' RS4...

I don't really see the point of an RS4 convertible. I know I would never buy one. As YSS said, the money is better spent elsewhere. It may appeal more to the convertible-loving crowd more however.

If you put a gun to my head and screamed "buy a convertible for $70K or less," chances are I'd probably end up with a CLK550, or being the cheap-ass I am, I'd be happy enough with a Mustang GT, and maybe while I'm at it, throw a bit of Rousch or Saleen kit at it...

A 335i Convertible starts at $50K. Yes, it's down 120 hp on power, but it's a better chassis and has a retractable hardtop.

It's the better choice, if you're looking specifically that that type of German car.

I was going to say a XK convertible, but that costs a staggering $82K. What is Jaguar thinking?

Yup give me a 335i, I just built one online and nicely optioned out it came to $57,225

Add another to the list who'd just take a 335i. If I had to take a convertible, fine, but the price difference leaves a lot of room for a turbo swap 👍

And yet for some odd reason, when the eventual A5/S5/RS5 convertible comes out, I won't be as bothered by it as this. I still won't like it, but I'd love to know why they aren't on the same rung in my mind. Ho hum.
