I've had a wheel for 3 weeks or so. The first week was hard, the second week I thought I was back to where I was, and the third week I thought I was doing better than with the DS3.

I went back to the practice tracks tonight, and had a blast on a couple I don't use that often... High Speed Ring, Deep Forest etc.

I used the same car, set-up etc. that I'd used with the DS3.... and was pretty dismayed to see that I'm still well off what I could do with the DS3.

Example... a race car around High Speed Ring I did 3.5 seconds faster back in February with the DS3!! That's a big difference on a short track in the same car.

But, when you think about it, isn't a DS3 a really efficient way to race? I mean to go to full lock takes milliseconds on the DS3, but much longer on a wheel.

Maybe cars in the future will have joypads, not steering wheels and pedals??

I don't know where I'm losing so much time.... I'll have to flash the DS3 up again and try to see where I'm going wrong.

Any thoughts / advice?

Both have their pros and cons. As you said before, you have the ability to go to full lock much quicker with a DS3, but with a wheel you can be much more precise for finesse moves like tight passes or saving a squirrelly car. So it really just comes down to personal preference. 👍

Took me a while when I made the switch, and I still go back to the stick for drifting. When we had the Academy I noticed all the fastest drivers used a wheel but I also noticed they had sensitivity set high, active steering on and SRF on. Have you played around with these settings at all?

yea i got my g27 on friday and its hard
but im using a makeshift wobbly cockpit until i build mine out of pvc today
i got way better in the first 3 or so hours but couldnt improve because of how wobbly it was cause of the force feedback.
and does anyone know why my wheel jerks to the left and right as much and 40 degress at a time when i turn (it was a lot worse with power steering)
it doesnt happen all the time but it sometimes does happen
and i cant play nurburgring because it happens alot there :(

Turning down the feedback strength in the first section of the wheels menu in options should help with that I'd think. It's really strong on my wheel as well which also made it build heat really fast until I turned it down. Even on a setting of 1 it seems to be strong enough for mine. That actually sounds just like what GT4 used to do to me, but I never noticed it happening in GT5. I hated having to hold the wheel so tight to contain that.

On Topic -- It really does take quite a while to get truly as good overall as you were before. Just remember how many many many days you spent practicing to get as good as you got with a controller and it makes more sense.

Thanks all for the tips and advice!

Although I'm still slower, I wouldn't give up the wheel. It changes the whole game for the better. I really, really love using a wheel. I was just surprised that my times were so far off, when i thought I'd got the hang of it!

I weaned myself off SRF, Active Steering and Stability Assist some time ago. Maybe I should use them to help a little while I get used to the wheel After all, I had them on for the first month or so using the DS3 to get used to the game. I'll try and see if it helps!

Good point.... it took a couple of months to get "up to speed" with a DS3.
