Multiple sources close to Nintendo tell IGN that the company is gearing up to debut the anticipated successor to its DS Lite handheld during the first half of this year in America. More specifically, the company has allegedly relayed to its partners that DSi will ship stateside in early April, most likely on April 4. Insiders assert that they have been told the system will retail for $179.99 when it launches domestically.

Linky.

Lets hope people aren't catatonic this time around so this fails hard and fast so Nintendo can pull their head out of the asses. $180? For what? At least Sony's slow-but steady updates to the PSP (which, it should be mentioned, will cost $10 less) have never removed any core features or slashed battery life. Even the otherwise-awful Game Boy Micro wasn't ballsy enough to actually be more expensive than the GBA it was replacing.

I also think it would be a truly epic sign of douchebaggery if Nintendo starts trying to do a VC-style thing on the DSi with GBA games...

Oh well. I have a PSP now, so I don't care.

The minute I found out it didnt have an gameboy / advance slot they lost a sale!

And now seeing the crazy price they can forget it.

The backwards compatibility thing is huge to me... having had a Gameboy since 1989.

Toronado, the Mini didn't cost more than the GBA because it didn't bring anything new to the table. The DSi does, so I can see why it will cost what it does. This cut out the GBA slot and processor for other things, like a thinner form factor, internal memory, and a webcam.

I won't be buying one, as I have my DS Lite and haven't heard of any games I need to have that only the DSi will play.

I know that, but most of the things that the DSi brings to the table over the DSL are on the software side of things. For what it is right now, the DSi doesn't do anything that the PSP and DSL didn't already do.
