During the Rugby earlier on when we had 'God save the Queen' reverberating around a packed Twickenham I got the goosepimples. I always do, despite not liking the monarchy (that's for another thread) But I ask, why and how do we got goosepimples, also why can't we control them?

That seems to happen to me too whenever the U.S national anthem is played in a stadium.

but why and how we get them is a very interesting point

I get abit more than goose pimples when Katherine Jenkins sings the Welsh Anthem...

Wikipedia
Goose bumps (AE), also called goose pimples, goose flesh (BE), chill bumps, chicken skin (Hawaiian Pidgin), or the medical term cutis anserina, are the bumps on a person's skin at the base of body hairs which involuntarily develop when a person is cold or experiences strong emotions like fear or awe.
From reading on abit further it's part of the fight or flight instinct. Basically the hairs are standing up to make you seem more impressive, kind of like a cat before a fight.

I always get goosepimples when listening to the US National Anthem.

I think its human nature when you hear a loud crowd roaring together in sync it taps into the emotional warrior in you from our past (like millions of years ago)..... like battle chants and it makes you tingle with excitement and readiness, I dont think it has much to do with what is being sung (maybe patriotism can be a factor) but anything like football club chants can make you hair stand on end because of the togetherness of it all....we are sociable beings.

The sound of thousands of people reverberating round a ring will bring an emotional reaction....

Flower of Scotland has the same effect for me.

God Save the Queen does nothing for me, and neither it should when it contains the line "Rebellious Scots to crush."

I guess we all take pride in our country, regardless of whether we are in favour of the monarch and so on.

Just think of the World Cup, football that is. WOW, you know, you see and hear thousands of fans sing a long with the players. It's a special moment, we all join in and feel strong. It is great... :dopey:

I never knew about the Scottish bit in the anthem. Though as the Queen is also the queen of Scotland (and the other 2 countries) isn't that a little odd?

Yes, it is odd... and it also explains succinctly why we don't use it any more!
