From the 1st day I bought my Playstation 3 almost one year ago, I used to play it on horizontal. But like 6 months ago, I moved my set up to another desk and I wanted to check it on vertical. I can say that it's quite quite cooler on this position, since there's less contact with the desk and more contact with the air. I've read a lot of comments on the net which agreed with this opinion.

At first time I used to left a game case above when the Playstation 3 was off, to avoid dust coming into the Playstation 3 through the holes. Every time I turned it on, I removed the game case and all that. Unfortunately, one day I realized after a few minutes of play that I was playing with the game case still on the holes so I was on warning and I removed the case on 0 seconds. I was surprized that the Playstation 3 wasn't even hot, so I think this was one more proof about that the vertical position is quite cooler than the horizontal one. The problem is: from that time I have never used the game case above the holes when off, to avoid this situation in the future. So, what do you think about the dust coming through the holes on the up side of the Playstation 3 when on vertical?

Any of you had any problems with the dust on it?. Playstation 3 looks quite nice on vertical and it even recollects less dust on it's cover since less area is exposed to it, but when talking about the dust that comes into the sytem through the holes, I'm not sure if the vertical position is worse, since I really don't know if they're using some kinds of filtered fans or filtered area inside.

My system has always worked on perfect conditions, so no problem at all, but I'm just worried about using this position for its whole life and have problems about dust inside in the future. I've taken a few looks from the holes with a light focused on it and I really can't see much dust there into the system, seems to be it just goes to the outside body of the Blu-Ray reader and so on. But who knows.

What's your opinion?

As long as you vacuum it every so often, not covering the holes on top won't be an issue.

The general consensus is that vertical is the best for cooling and looks whilst horizontal is the best for stability and the blu ray drive (particularly the usability).

Heat rises so naturally having the unit vertical is the best because thats where the major vent is. Also having the front grille of the unit higher in the air means it can get a clearer airstream. Having it this way also helps with dust because it will only land on the top if you don't cover it. Dust shouldnt land on the top however when its in use because the hot air rising will prevent it from collecting.

Hope that helps :)👍

My PS3 is horizontal because im scared of knocking it over and its easier to put disks in the drive. I keep a cloth over it when its not in use and clean it occasionally so its doesnt get dusty although im finding it really hard to clean the USB and rear ports.. anyone know how to properly clean those out?

I keep my PS3 horizontal and just vaccum all the holes and USB ports once every two weeks. I don't have room in my cabinet to stand it up vertically. I have a 60gb model and it does run hot sometimes (summer), but the fan rarely ever kicks into high speed.

I have a special cloth just for my PS3 to get rid of the dust. I have mine horizontal because I, too, am afraid of knocking it over or with my luck I'll put the disk in upside down.

I use the horizontal position for usability reasons, such as space and ease of use. I have not cleaned out my 320GB PS3(60GB model) since my purchase in August 07'. I'm not worried with overheating issues since I have had my PS3 for such a long time.

Use compressed air to blow the dust off.

I have mine vertically. I'll run a cloth over it now and again and less frequently get a vacuum cleaner to the vents.

I can't really feel any air coming out of the side vents (top when vertical)... well, maybe just a faint amount, althought it is hard to tell. The rear of the unit pumps out warm / hot air though...

Is this the same for others? Mine is a 60GB UK launch model.

I wouldn't care too much about dust. We humans and naturally dusty animals, and i'm sure the PS3 is designed with that in mind.

Giancarlo - I don't know about that. I have blown out a load of dust from very loud PCs before, only for them to become much quieter and run at much lower temperatures. Build up of dust has a big effect - I would remove it now and again to prevent overstressing components with a lot of heat.

it takes in air from the top and lets it out the back

I just did a blue Rizla (thin rolling paper) test over the side vent. Most parts seem to suck the paper to it, so yes as you suggested it is an air intake. But some parts case the Rizla to float. Seems 80% intake, 20% exhaust!
