I was wondering if anyone knew of a good DVD ripping program, preferably for free.

Next academic year I am doing a year abroad in Germany, and I am a bit of a kleptomanic in the sense that I do not throw possesions away and have lots of stuff. The point is, I won't like to be away from my fairly large DVD collection, but it would be impractical to take them all with me, so if I could rip them to my PC and store on an external harddrive this would be a major relief, because I am nervous enough as it is, without having to be away from most of my 'stuff'.

Any tips, recommendations, alternatives et cetera, are welcome.

I use DVDFab. They have a free trial, but eventually you have to buy it. I also like them because they have an active forum where you can trouble shoot problems.

For tips, I would rip the "main title" only, as previews and extra content will waste lots of time and space. Better to start soon if you have a large collection, this task is best done 2-3 discs a day. Trying to rip your entire collection a week before you leave will be frustrating. Good luck!

I'm sure Alcohol 52% would be able to make images of a DVD but I'm not sure if it can do movies. Worth a try. Have the program set up a virtual drive and make an image from a movie. Then to test it, just mount the image onto the virtual drive and see if it loads.

DVD Decrypter + Handbrake is the only way to go.

2 Step process if you want to re-encode, but worth it. Depending on your CPU it almost takes the exact same amount of time to Rip DVD as it does to Re-Encode, so works well if you're diligent.

This is an absolute gravedig, but I've managed to get DVD Shrink to work, and I am now in the process of backing up my extensive DVD collection. Doubly useful considering I'm moving abroad next week.

Just thought I'd revive it with an update in case anybody else needed a similar programme.

I dont think any of you chaps should be telling him how to circumvent DVD encyrption.

This thread should have been locked back in 2011. Discussions of unlawful security circumventing of DVD media is not allowed on this site.
