I went to install Unreal Tournament 2003 and saw the amount of space it was going to take was 3GB. Well, I guess it'd have to take up that much space for 3 CDs. Anyway, that got me thinking. Why don't developers start putting there games on a single DVD disc. Heaps of people have DVD drives in there computer, and if they don't, they are not exactly expensive. Developers could fit a hell of a lot more stuff on a DVD disc and then I wouldn't get confused which one was the play disc.

DVD isn't a "standard" yet. What I mean my standard is that almost every computer has a CD-ROM drive, it's almost a givin'. But, not everyone has a DVD-ROM drive. I'd say about in a year, you'll see some games come on DVD, but now is to early. Enter the Matrix and Flight Simulator 2004 are already bulging at 4 CDs to install. If a popular game that came out on DVD, it might help push the "standard" and make people (like me :) ) buy a DVD-ROM drive.

Well, I see your point about the standards, but I still reckon they should switch to DVD.

Yeah, DVD Drives are starting to get cheaper now...:) My laptop has one...;)

Yeah, they need to gradually introduce it. Like HDTV. Right now, our tv signals are Analog, but we are in the process of switching to HDTV. You cant do it all at once, or you will lose sales since not everyone has the right equipment...

If you think about it, computers that don't have DVD drives probably wouldn't be good enough to run the game because its age. So computers with DVD drives they are most likely to be up to date.

Cripes - even my battered old 3 1/2 year old Toshiba laptop has a DVD-Rom drive. Get with the times people!

Yeah - it's an old Toshiba 2670. Great laptop - the cat vomited on the keyboard a couple of years ago - pulled the keys off, quick wipe, good as new. I think it was the first laptop Toshiba did with a DVD Rom. It's only a P3 450 - I put some more memory in it - it runs about 192 meg now, mostly just use it surf the net, read e-mail, and write letters - oh yeah, and play Jack Nicklaus 6. Handy to go away with, gives me somewhere to store digital photos.

Heh.

I hate to burst everyones bubble, but many games to come of DVDs. You just have to buy them from the right place. Multiple format is practically standard now, you usually just have to buy it from the company. For instance, Nox has had a DVD version for years. They like to produce CDS, because th customer feels like they are buying more, and don't feel gipped. They can also fit more advertising into the CD case packaging.
