I thought the PS3 conference was a tad on the boring side. Where Microsoft just showcased the games, Sony's conference had a lot of figures and stuff I didn't really care about.
I've been very busy, but after finally getting a chance to catch up and watch the press conferences, if you actually time how much Sony allocated towards any figures and stuff, it added up to less than 5 min out of the 2 hour presentation, and despite having to cover three markets (PS3, PS2, PSP), they still showed more games and more exclusives than Microsoft... so it doesn't quite add up the way some have suggested.
Besides, while some people don't care about figures, considering how many people, even on GTP, have tried to downplay the success of the PS3 and the popularity of their games, and the quantity of games, the numbers definitely suggest otherwise, and if the point of the presentations is to promote their brand and show how popular they are, then it makes perfectly good sense why they do it.
However for those who could care less about facts and figures, the good news is that they didn't spend a lot of time on it. 👍
Really it's not a competition, it's really just a way for developers to showcase their stuff to the consumers.
As for whether or not it's a competition - it certainly is to Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, as it has always been.
To us consumers? Then no, it's not, or at least it shouldn't be... but then again, after hearing a few 360 fanboys making some pretty wild claims about the lack of any good games for the PS3 and at least
one person who even goes so far as to claim the PS3's game selection sucks, I can see why some may feel it is more of a competition than it needs to be.
As far as the OP's topic is concerned though, I can certainly understand and even agree with much of what he said and his sentiment.
I feel this way despite having already been
very impressed by Microsoft's presentation, and went into detail about it in the E3 thread.
Yet the fact remains that Microsoft spent much of their time on titles that will be available for the PS3 as well, and on project NATAL which we not only have no idea when it will be available to use, let alone what games will support it... and as already mentioned in the E3 thread, other than software differences, Sony has offered the same basic technology since 2007 with their PS Eye and has already released a few games and utilities that take advantage of the motion sensing camera.
If you contrast what MS showed
(as discussed in the E3 Thread) with what Sony showed, the differences are fairly significant:
- Right off the bat it started with a series of clips from over 50 upcoming games... 50, most of which are exclusive, all being shown on a massive 80'x40' screen.
Although Sony seriously screwed up and should have included the titles of each one as they were shown, although I suspect it was intended to be a teaser to get people to visit their E3 booths for more details.
- Then to further the emphasis of just how significant the library of games are for the PlayStation brand, Jack Tretton then announces that there are already 364 games that are coming out on their PlayStation platforms this year alone.

- Then he went on to discus the Pre-E3 Gamer's Day event and just a few of the upcoming games like:
- Modern Warfare 2
- Final Fantasy XIII
- Ratchet & Clank Future: Crack in Time
- Batman: Arkham Asylum
- Heavy Rain
- Rockband: The Beatles
- Then he briefly discussed the continued success of the PS2, and that nearly a 100 titles will be released for the PS2 this year.
- Announced that the PS3 would be launching in Brazil, Uruguay, and Paraguay. (I thought the PS3 was available everywhere by now
)
- Discussed the critical acclaim of the recently released game, InFamous.
- Announced the release of the Uncharted 2 beta.
- Discussed and showed 5-min of a realtime demo for Uncharted 2.
- Discussed and showed 5-min of a live realtime demo for MAG with 256 players from Seattle to San Diego and on stage.

- Discussed bundles and upcoming games for PSP like:
- Rock Band: Unplugged
- Dissidia: Final Fantasy
- Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines
- Hannah Montana: Rock Out the Show

- Pets
- LocoRocco 2
- Patapon 2
- Official reveal of the new PSP GO, not as a replacement for the PSP, but as an additional portable console.
- Announced the new application, Media Go to access the PSN store on the PC and to manage your content across a PC and PSP.

- Announced native support for the Video Service for PSP.
- Announced new partnership with providers like:
- Showtime

- World premier of Gran Turismo for PSP by Kazunori Yamauchi:
- 800 cars (including the Ferrari Enzo)
- 35 Tracks
- 60 Track Configurations
- Multiplayer for up to four players
- Races
- Time Trials
- Drift Trials
- Mission Challenge Mode (including the legacy License Mode of the original GT)
- Ability to trade and share cars between players.
- World premier of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker for PSP by Hideo Kojima:
- Kojima will be directly involved as both producer and writer.
- The main development group from MGS4 will be heading the development of this game.
- Set in 1974, ten years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and four years after Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops.
- The game is set in Costa Rica, with Big Boss as the central character once more.
- When an unknown military force invades Costa Rica, the nation must rely on Militaires Sans Frontières, the mercenary army that will eventually give rise to Outer Heaven.
- Multiple Snakes are shown in the trailer, hinting at the inclusion of co-operative play.
- There also seems to be an updated CQC and evacuation system along with the ability to move while crouched as seen in Metal Gear Solid 4.
- Announced a brand new Resident Evil game will be coming out for the PSP next year.
- In addition to the titles already mentioned, they also announced the following upcoming PSP titles:
- LittleBigPlanet
- SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 3
- Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
- MotorStorm: Arctic Edge
- Hannah Montana: Rock Out the Show
- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
- And showed clips of over 30 upcoming PSP games.
- Discussed the ever growing popularity of the PSN with 14 million PSN users downloading 500 million different items from the PSN store; more games and more exclusives coming out than any other console; and 50 new PS1 classics on their way.
- Announced the launch of Final Fantasy VII on PSN.
- Discussed the popularity of Home with 6.5 million unique users in Home 85% of which have used Home multiple times; the popularity of the exclusive APG game Xi, 1.5 million visitors to EA Sports Complex in one month alone, an average of 3 new games spaces coming to Home each month beginning with:
- And more spaces coming up from:
- Activision
- Capcom
- EA
- Eidos
- Namco
- Ubisoft
- 100,000 virtual items sold in less than two months for just SFIV & RE5 items alone; and around 100 virtual items coming to Home on average each month.
- Once again, to emphasize the amount of games coming out for the PS3, they then showed a collection of clips from 50 upcoming PS3 games.
- Announced the title of the secretive exclusive new IP game from Rockstar, Agent, a 70's era espionage game.
- Premiered 5-min demo of Assassin's Creed 2.
- World premier of new Final Fantasy XIII trailer.
- World premier of the first trailer for the PS3 exclusive Final Fantasy XIV: Online.
- Announced for the first time the development of a new extremely precise tracking motion sensing controller with sub-millimeter accuracy followed by a live 10-min demonstration of the prototype device. Perhaps the most impressive thing was how two of these new controllers work seamlessly together to manipulate objects and to simulate things like a sword and shield, and pulling back the arrow on a bow. 👍
- Announced the new motion controller will launch in Spring of 2010.
- Announced new licensed DLC for LittleBigPlanet.
- Announced a brand new exclusive IP, ModNation Racers which follows in the footsteps on LittleBigPlanet in allowing users to create and share their own races with other players over PSN.
- 10-min explanation and demonstration of ModNation Racers:
- Video shows how you can custom create characters and cars, like in LBP, only what appears to be even greater customization. 👍
- Next video shows actual gameplay with very detailed graphics and various arcade racer style gameplay, but with some real physics modeling.
- Finally they showed a live 5-min demo using the Track Studio which allows you to very easily and quickly create your own course and race... much faster than LBP, but to be fair, LBP create tools are also far more advanced and detailed. That said they did show a lot of options, like:
- Auto Track Tool (w/automatic overpass construction)
- Basic Modify Tool (adjust track)
- Sub-Theme Painting (change parts or all of the track surfaces)
- Terrain Tool (add and adjust various types of terrain around and even under the track, and change surface of terrain)
- Scene Props (add things like trees, houses, animals, etc)
- Track Props (add things like weapon pick-ups, safety cones, barrels, gates, etc)
- Global Setting (adjust cloud cover, time of day, terrain level, and water level)
- Official announcement and trailer for the final game of Icco's trilogy of games (Ico and Shadow of the Colossus), called The Last Guardian, a PS3 exclusive.
- World premier of the first trailer for Gran Turismo 5. Among the most talked about things seen in the trailer:
- Extremely detailed graphics
- NASCAR licensed cars
- WRC licensed cars (and hopefully courses)
- Detailed pit stops
- Cosmetic damage (but only seen on a WRC car)
- World premier of a live 5-min demo of God of War III. The disemboweling of the minotaur, and chopping of the tail followed by breaking of the horn of that last beast and ramming the horn through it's eye was simply brutal!

So all told, even ignoring the "facts and figures" from the presentation, even if you ignore the roll out of a brand new portable console, even if you ignore the extensive live tech demo for the upcoming motion sensing controller, and even if you ignore all the news on PSN, the Video Store and Home.
In games alone. Sony managed to show demos of five games:
- Uncharted 2
- MAG
- Assassin's Creed 2

- God of War III
Officially announce or show trailers for the first time several new exclusive games including:

So that's 50 exclusive titles, and they also showed clips from about 50 multi-platform titles as well. Games, games, and more games.
Other than personal preferences, Sony most definitely had the most to offer, and more importantly to them, showed the most games that are only available on their platforms.
This despite the fact that Sony didn't have nearly as much time during their press conference to allocate towards the PS3 as MS had towards the 360, as it doesn't just sell a single console and games for that one console... yet despite that they still managed to show more titles, and most importantly to the PS3, announced more new exclusives like the new IP from Rockstar games,
Agent (a 70's espionage style game) not to be confused with another upcoming exclusive game,
The Agency, as well as the new
Final Fantasy XIV,
ModNation Racing, Icco's
Last Guardian.
Based on most of the reviews I have read on E3, all agree that Sony's press conference was the most effective and covering the most games that separate them from other consoles.
However, E3 isn't just about the press conferences. In fact, it's a lot bigger than just that.
Sony had the most playable demos, including a 30-min demo of
God of War III that was only partially shown during the conference.
Based on the many hours of coverage and countless articles and videos coming from the floor of E3 where people were getting to learn a great deal more about these upcoming games and features then what any 2-hour presentation can offer, watch more footage of the games, and even play real-time demos... that's where Sony and specifically the PS3 truly dominated.
Just in game footage alone, Sony has released nearly a hundred new trailers from E3 that they didn't have time to show in their press conference, many of which are now available for download off the PSN stores, including trailers and videos for the following upcoming games, of which most are exclusive titles:
- Army of Two: The 40th Day
- Assassin’s Creed 2
- Batman Arkham Asylum (exclusive "Play as Joker" feature)
- Battlefield 1943: Pacific
- Battlefield: Bad Company 2
- BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger
- Brutal Legend
- Buzz! World Quiz
- Call of Juarez: BIB
- Castlevania: Lord of Shadows
- Dante's Inferno
- DC Universe Online
- Dissidia: Final Fantasy
- Dragon Age: Origins
- Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires
- Echochrono (Replay)
- EyePet
- Fat Princess
- Final Fantasy VII PSN
- Final Fantasy XIII
- Final Fantasy XIV
- Front Mission: Evolved
- Gran Turismo 5
- Gran Turismo PSP
- Gravity Crash
- Heavy Rain
- Hustle Kings
- Invizimals
- Jak & Daxter: Lost Frontier
- Katamari Forever
- King of Fighters XII
- LittleBigPlanet PSP
- Mafia II
- Monster Hunter: Freedom Unite
- MotorStorm: Arctic Edge
- Mushroom Wars
- MX vs ATV Reflex
- NCAA Football 10
- Nier
- Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2
- Numblast
- Patapon 2
- PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe
- PixelJunk Shooter
- Planet 51
- Quantum
- Ratchet & Clack Future: Crack in Time
- Red Dead Redemption
- Smash Cars
- SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 3
- Sonic and SEGA All Stars Racing
- SoulCalibur: Broken Destiny
- Split Second
- Tales of Vesperia
- Tekken 6
- Terminator Salvation
- The Agency
- Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 10
- Trash Panic
- Uncharted 2
- Vancouver Olympics 2010
- White Knight Chronicles
- WipEoutHD Fury
To sum up this mega post... as evidence of what was shown, both during the official presentation and during the show, as the OP said, there is no doubt in my mind as well that PS dominated E3 this year... and by a wide margin, and he isn't the only one that referred to E3 as
PSe3.
There is no doubt in my mind that PS dominated E3 this year. I thought 2008 was a great year for the PS brand, but what's coming for 2009 and 2010 to me, from what I saw on day one of E3, is undescriptible. I can't wait to see what they have to show us about White Knight Chronicles.
Agreed.
