From the '70s (apparently shortly after the 'Ring was opened to the public), here's a collection of home movies of the public out for a Sunday drive.

Nurburgring Follies

The guy on the bike gets madd props yo. Even among the cars there are some real tankslappers. In particular one of the last ones (around 3:22 in the clip) gave me chills... and the guy in the Orange NSU Prinz just never does get it right.

Theres a good lesson about rear engine cars and physics. Thank God that the convertible vw didn't flip over! A seat belt would have been useful for the one that was thrown out. At least most of them walked away, very entertaining. 👍

The guy in the Beetle at 1:52 is hilarious....

I'll rephrase that.

The guy not in the Beetle at 1:52 is hilarious, and very lucky...

i guess the green hell wasnt so green back then. And how did the guy manage to fall out of his beetle?

What corner is that? christ, those Bugs were wheels up quicker than you could say....well, I don't know...

Here's the original Google Video link (larger video window)

Why the guy fell out: Seatbelts weren't exactly the biggest thing back then.

Why the cars were rolling over: A bouncy, soft suspension and relatively high center of gravity, combined with the speeds, cornering forces (especially with the quick left-right), and in some cases the trackside curbs, will do that.

What corner is it: Adenauer Forst, of course.

Hehe, that's a great video. I've seen it before but still good. The 3 BMWs at the beginning (1602s, 2002s?) look like part of a drifting team :)

Great vid 👍

I love how this thread is titled "Early days..." and not "Glory days..."

And the car at 3:30 fell off the track.

Pretty crazy though. It's amazing how much cars have changed over the years too.

The cars, yes. Not the drivers, though:

(Yes, I know, it's nowhere near as funny as the old one, it's just for comparison)

I reckon it's Adenauer Forst, just before the T3 split time on the GT4 circuit.

Great video! Given the safety standards back then, it's amazing that more people were not killed there than there actually was... :nervous:

Hehe,[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif] Adenauer Forst is fairly infamous for 'forgetting to turn left' incidents. :dopey:

Some of those crashes were insane! I don't believe the guy fell out of his Beetle.
