I love watching replays of tracks like Nurburgring. The elevation changes at that track are really impressive visually.
But when actually driving the track(s), I never game that same impression. It generally just seems flat.
Although I'm mid-40's, I'm new to the GT series and not really sure if this is prevalent in other games as well.
I use the bumper cam view if that matters.

what? i dont know what you're on about. elevation changes in the game is actually realistic and true to form. You can feel every corner dip and elevation in the ring. i don't know how you cant feel it.

suzuka is another track with superb elevation changes

fuji has alot of elevation changes as well.

if you have a force feedback wheel you can feel the loss/gain of traction too

I'd have to agree with the OP. I can hardly tell if I'm going uphill unless I see my speedometer slowing down or dropping.

Try the Lambo Gran Tour event. You will feel the elevation changes there, especially if you go over the hills too fast. The guard rails will say hello.

It's known that when driving on a track and watching a replay you will notice elevation changes more during the replay... I think it was David Coulthard who thought that the uphill climb at Spa was actually flat, because it seemed flat to him when driving

I use a G27, and I can feel and clearly know when there is elevation change...at the end of the day I want what you're smoking!

I don't ever have a problem noticing that I'm driving uphill or downhill in GT5, at the ring or anywhere else. Hell, I can even tell when I'm rolling and accelerating uphill at some places, great physics that.

But the elevation change does seem a little bit muted at the ring in GT5, it looks a lot more pronounced in real on-board videos, or when driving the track in rFactor -- which actually has the premier Ring in all of racing game land, by the way, much nicer than the GT4 - err - 5 version.

The reason you don't feel elevation changes in the game as in real life is because the game does not have the force of gravity acting directly upon your body.

gt5 are some odd bumby section on track. It does not matter what car you drive in section or how much is speed. Allways shake like mad. I think that they are using some kind bumby script. Very notisable in toscana on track editor made track.

Never had a problem noticing elevation change during game play, but the elevation changes in GT5 seem poor when compare to the real circuits.

It doesn't look accurate to me, and if they can't get the F1 layout correct how much is the Nordschleife out?

^ The difference in camera angle should account for that, GT5 camera is a little bit lower than the real thing :)

And replying to the OP, I only see this problem on La Sarthe and SSR7, but I notice the elevatipn changes more readily when I got an FFB wheel :dopey:

I also have trouble noticing elevation changes, must be because of the camera angle (I'm using FPV).

Go make a cutom track at Eifel circuit. If you can't see changes then, you have eye problems.

Use cockpit view with extra zoom. It looks more realistic that way.
The sense of speed, elevation changes and field of view.
Also try HUD off, it distracts. I don't like the extra zoom option much 'cause I'd need a bigger screen with higher resolution or multiple screens.

My problem with the elevation in GT is that the cars don't lose any power at high altitude.

Otherwise, its the next best thing to real life. I know exactly when i'm going up or down hill and the cars react well to it. I also use bumper cam exclusively.

As mentioned, make some tracks. Loads of undulation on the Toscana and Eiffel scenarios. 👍

You need to do more real-world driving, man. You'll recognize every uphill and downhill in GT5 after you've driven something similar spiritedly in real life.

It boils down to uphill, crest, downhill, dip, uphill, ect... Your brain has to recognize these things and remember them to have the feeling of elevation change. In real life they are very important... If you want your car unbroken. You ought to feel the same urgent need to control your car in the game as you would in real life over crests and into dips. Although, in the game, your car won't actually fall apart from hitting the road.

Nürburgring only has 300m of elevation, which should not affect the performance of any car at that altitude

I've had slow cars at custom tracks that stop halfway up a hill and go backwards...at full throttle.

Imho you don't notice elevation changes because the car is aligned with the uphill/downhill. If the car is aligned and eyes still look ahead, I don't notice uphills in GT5 as I don't in real life with long uphill highway roads.

Sure, if you still doubt it when elevation changes (crests, dips.... the 'ring is full) I can't help you.

I think that the physics of downhill/uphill of the track is there and affect the car as it should. From the POV of the player, you can't notice that you are going up or down unless there is a visual queue that tell you so. I think the reason for that is that you, outside of the game, do not "feel" the forces that that would tell you in real life if you are going up or down... Anyway, my point is I do the elevation change is there but you can't feel it...
