elevation difference definition

hi, this question might be somewhat stupid, but here goes. Each track has a defined "elevation difference" in its track information. Does this refer to the difference between the highest and lowest point of the track, or does it refer to every cumulative change in altitude (both up and down counted) throughout the whole track?
