Was playing around with some gear ratio, and final drive ratios, with a car with a V8 so quite a bit or torque. car had no mods. on Brands hatch Indy as I know the track well.
I found I made very little difference, was slightly better over geared, (so never got into 5th gear)
if I ramped power with all mods possible, so it had a higher RPM power band, I found getting the gears right for the track had a much more effect, about 2% quicker.
