Entry speed into a corner when drifting

Hi,

I would like to get some of your opinions on the above subject... I know some people would say you can enter a corner faster when drifting but that doesn't make sense as grip racers will try not to oversteer as it will increase their lap time.

For e.g. a corner can be taken at 100 kmph (or 62 mph) using a particular car and tire combination. When drifting, would one be going at :-

- Exact same entry speed as when grip racing i.e. 100 kmph
- Lower entry speed e.g. 80 kmph
- Higher entry speed e.g. 120 kmph

This is assuming the track is not very wide e.g. Suzuka or Eiger.

Would be good to know how you guys attack a corner ;)

Typically I try and enter a corner as fast as I can. The only way to do this is to initiate the drift well in advance of the corner. To me, this is far more aesthetically pleasing. However, this cannot be achieved with every corner. Which brings me to a point. The speed you take into a corner varies pretty wildly depending on the corner. S turns, hairpins, sweepers, etc... Most hairpins need to be taken pretty slow as to not over shoot the apex and run wide on the exit. S-turns tend to be taken at medium speeds to keep a good line, so as to not overshoot your point to flick the car into the second (or 3rd or 4th) corner. Sweepers are the high speed entry corners. These can be entered at quite high speeds, but again need to be initiated far in advance of the corner, so you don't run wide of the apex and ruin your exit line. So, it's all elementary really. All in all you're going to be going slower around a track in a drifting situation than in grip racing.

I agree that initiating the drift before the corner looks way better. That's what I noticed when looking at some of Team-mixi's YouTube videos. Before every corner, they seem to do a manji-like drift and hit the corner nicely sideways. I wonder how that's done. I tried doing something like that using the G25 but can't seem to get close (or look as good). Closest I got was to use the ebrake to initiate the manji abit before the corner entry and flick it back to the right direction for the corner. I guess more practise is required ;)

It makes perfect sense...Although drifting may yield higher entry speeds v.s. a grip line, the reason why gripping is faster is because of the exit speed. When you drift you do not have all the available traction pushing you forward v.s. griping where you use all the traction available to accelerate forward.

DR pretty much summed up what correct speed is... I believe that your entry speed should be as fast as you can handle. The more car control you develop the faster you might be able to hit corners. This of course comes with practice and seat time. DRIFT ON!
 
Ok... Thanks to DR & dking for clearing up some FUD for me ;)

I think I'll just have to experiment with the entry speed on various corners to get a feel of what my level of ability allows me to go at. And slowly push the envelope ;)

Watch some D1 entry speeds. Start off a notch slower than their speeds and that could probably get you started
 
definately start off slower and initiate later, then pick-up speed when you get the feel for it and initiate earlier. on some cars you need those higher speeds to keep the momentum/drift going till the end.(especially under-powered ones) It's just practice. Definately watching real D1 video's and their lines, how they aproach can help with that. Drifting is NOT the fastest way around a turn....but it's definatley the most fun. :dopey:👍

I did... I was shocked at their entry speeds... even the Hachi-Roku was way faster than some S15. So I guess its all up to the driver's skill level ;)

Yup... I'm okay with slower entry speed but am now practising to bump it up a notch. Been practising with the Z06 on S1 in Suzuka and getting lots of help from my dori-sensei :sly:

A stripped out AE-86 is VERY light. This is probably the sole reason it can keep up to a lot of the faster cars. I remember watching one event where a Trueno was keeping up to 500hp Silvias with 150hp or so.
