For the past 1-2 weeks, I've been waking up in the middle of the night (around 2-3 am mostly) - for what reason, I don't know. Maybe it's my dad making a 🤬 load of sound while making coffee? Or just waking up to dreams? Stress? A disease?

I'm 16 and have to go to school at 7 am - not easy to stay awake when you only have 4-5 hours of sleep. I seriously don't know if I should see a doctor or if I'm just a light sleeper.

On top of that - my left shoulder seems to hurt a bit whenever bending it a certain way.

Help?

Perhaps you could see a doctor/psychologist about this. By the way, are you sweating in any way? It could be from nightmares. I'm a light sleeper myself, and sleep a bit less than intended. But I don't wake up in the middle of the night like what you're experiencing.

First of all never treat medical information off the Internet as fact.
Stress is probably your most likely cause, though. If you were physically ill I then would think you would be sleeping more rather than less.

Every night for 1-2weeks?

I usually don't jump to go see a doctor right away (despite having free health care), because things like this almost seem like a temporary thing, maybe you've messed up your sleeping pattern by eating at different times or napping during the day when you normally don't.

Shoulders hurting could be a result of a bad sleeping posture... Have you been sleeping differently?

Sounds like maybe your school load is stressing you out which is understandable with the semester coming to an end and all.

Meh,

I sleep an average of 4-5 hours a night normally, I usually catch up on sleep during the weekend.

If you want something that will help try get your hands on some Valium tablets or Melatonin tablets. both are legal and should put you to sleep quiet easily.

You're getting older. You don't sleep like a little kid, anymore. Welcome to adulthood. It's going to be with you for the rest of your life.

Stress. If it bugs you, go see your doctor. You may have breathing problems (like sleep apnea) that are causing you to wake at odd hours, too.

Ok man here's what you have to do. Number one must try to get 8hrs sleep. So if you have to wake at 7 your in bed about to sleep at 11. You won't be stressed anymore with enough sleep. You can think clearer and be alert. Last meal of the day eat no sugar or grain carbs. Just meat and vegetables. It slows your body down an keeps it full for the whole night so you don't wake up randomly. Fat like dairy ice cream and stuff can also cause weird effects causing you to wake up randomly. Don't be in really bright rooms before you go to sleep try and turn off bright lights and switch to lamps or anything that makes the room slightly darker. This helps your brain realize its night and starts slowing it down. Finally completely relax a few hours before you sleep so anything that's worrying you just forget about it till the next day. Not like you can do anything about it before you sleep anyway so pretend it never happened.

Maybe your shoulder has to do with waking up? If you sleep with your shoulder flexed it can impinge tendons, bursae, and other things. This could cause you pain when you arm is raised and elbow/hand is above shoulder.

That or you arm is broken.:sly: Don't listen to TankAss, the internet knows all.

It could be your mattress causing the shoulder problem. I had something similar a couple of years ago. Try turning your mattress, end over end, so the underside feet end becomes topside head end.

I'd say get more sleep through pills like Tony said. Knock yourself out and hope you'll get a good rest.

Are you exercising? Tiring yourself out during the day can help you get a good nights sleep. As for the shoulder, if it keeps up then see a doctor.

Lol ok don't ever take pills to sleep. I promise they will cause you more problems in the future. Sleeping is natural just follow the tips I said and your good to go. The activity during the day thing is also good as you probably have too many carbs in your diet and are storing them as energy than never burning them off. Than they turn to fat and if your fat good luck sleeping or doing anything perfectly since your hormones are going to be so screwed up.

Please tell me you are joking.

I'm voting against the medication.

Healthy life and normal sleeping times seems the best at this time. Doctors sometimes want to help and give you medicine where it is not needed.
Remember Michael Jackson thought medication was the solution for sleeping issues as well. (now he probably had other issues)

Some people above already mentioned the right eating habits.
Some people already mentioned sports (this is also good against stress).
Slowing down your day and trying not to sleep too much (you might need less sleep growing up, less then 8 hours is actually good).
Also check your bed (the way it supports you) and the temperature, for me bed room temperature is critical, low temperature and I will sleep a lot less then normal, high temperature and I can not get our of bed or can not fall asleep.

But if you wake up, check if you have a health issue (breathing, etc...), if so some medical advice is needed.

The shoulder does not seem related, you will get more aches from time to time.

I agree, tried that some months ago and I had a very hard time getting back to normal without pills again.

What's your dad doing making coffee at 3 am? :odd:

Probably has to go to work, just like my dad. And his noise usually wakes me up, too.

I vote for stress caused by school though. For me my daily cycle is f'd up because I have to learn a lot and usually keep doing so until 10 - 11 pm. After that I sleep, but usually my brain is still awake...

... just like this:

A couple of questions.
Do you drink coffee, energy drinks, soda?
If yes you should drink your last caffienated beverage of the day before 4pm.
If you are sensitive to caffiene, no caffiene after noon.
Also, if you are eating your heavy meal of the day at dinner, you should prolly change and eat your big meal of the day at lunch. It's harder to sleep with an over full tummy.

Get to bed at a decent hour.
Talk to your dad about the coffee maker. Surely he can grind beans and set the timer the night before. Even if he has that Cuisinart that grinds before it brews there must be a setting to grind the night before.
He'll likely be very repentant that his coffee maker is not only waking you up, but keeping you from sleeping once you've been awakened. Dads tend to be like that.

If that doesn't work, hit your nearest music store, and get a couple of packages of Hearos (they're earplugs)

Also, if you sleep with any lights on, turn them off. Your sleep/wake cycle is tied to light/dark. I always sleep better in a darker room.

You might also ask your parents and your doc about a low dose of Melatonin. It is over the counter, and a natural sleep aid. Start with the lowest dose, and increase as needed per the instructions on the bottle.

If you have an iHome/Clock radio/mp3 speaker that allows you to listen to music on a timer. Set it for an hour, with music that calms you, at a reasonably low volume.

From your first post, you sound like a lot of my patients, and more than a few of the people I knew in nursing school. Review the symptoms, assume you have some potentially life threatening condition....
You're 16, unless you have a really crap medical history, or live downstream from a plant that dumps toxins into the city water, you are likely to be reasonably healthy.

The doctor has spoken. đź’ˇ

I can attest to shutting off the caffeine/sugar tap at 3-4 pm, unless absolutely necessary, to make sure you rest well. You might go to sleep well, but you wind up waking up far earlier than expected (and too ready to tackle the day).

On the other hand, see how productive you are at 2:30 am...It's amazing how much you can accomplish when there's virtually no distractions (save the internet). I did a lot of homework in high school and college that way, although "studying" wasn't typically as effective. Of course, if all you're thinking about is more sleep, this doesn't work so well.

Haha ya I forgot to mention caffeine. Maybe like one coffee when you wake if you have to than that's it. I has caffeine at around 8:30pm last night and didn't get t sleep until 4am. Than woke up early. Avoid it at night time.

A couple of questions.
Do you drink coffee, energy drinks, soda? Yes. 1-2 cups of coffee in the morning. Sometimes a Monster.

If yes you should drink your last caffienated beverage of the day before 4pm.
Last one is a Mt. Dew after school (1500).

If you are sensitive to caffiene, no caffiene after noon.
Not hyper like other people, but do notice I'm a bit more talkative (I'm the "quiet guy" at school).

Also, if you are eating your heavy meal of the day at dinner, you should prolly change and eat your big meal of the day at lunch. It's harder to sleep with an over full tummy.
Haven't been eating breakfast lately due to lack of choices. I'd cook up some eggs, but I'm sure my mom would be upset with having to buy eggs every week. Lunch is usually a slice of pizza, calizone, or salad with veggies. Dinner is probably the big meal, though sometimes its leftovers which is roughly about as filling as lunch.

Get to bed at a decent hour.
2030/2100 though my mind still daydreams for another 45min or so.

Talk to your dad about the coffee maker. Surely he can grind beans and set the timer the night before. Even if he has that Cuisinart that grinds before it brews there must be a setting to grind the night before.
Don't have a fancy coffee maker :sly:. About the only thing it does is make coffee, he just grinds with a grinder before putting it in.

He'll likely be very repentant that his coffee maker is not only waking you up, but keeping you from sleeping once you've been awakened. Dads tend to be like that.
I'm not 100% sure he's been up at 300, though I could be wrong. Just not bothered to get up and check.

If that doesn't work, hit your nearest music store, and get a couple of packages of Hearos (they're earplugs)
Reminds me of when I used to listen to my music through my headphones before bed (stereo now). Usually end up falling out.

Also, if you sleep with any lights on, turn them off. Your sleep/wake cycle is tied to light/dark. I always sleep better in a darker room.
Shutting the door last night seemed to help a bit. My alarm is annoyingly bright, so I block it with my 360 controller and TV remotes. About the only other thing is my stereo - but I set a sleep timer on it so it turns off 1-1.5 hours after I go to bed.

You might also ask your parents and your doc about a low dose of Melatonin. It is over the counter, and a natural sleep aid. Start with the lowest dose, and increase as needed per the instructions on the bottle.
I'll keep that in mind.

If you have an iHome/Clock radio/mp3 speaker that allows you to listen to music on a timer. Set it for an hour, with music that calms you, at a reasonably low volume.
Have it on every night set for an 50min-1hour. Music is geared more toward my taste (rock) rather than classical/smooth rock.

From your first post, you sound like a lot of my patients, and more than a few of the people I knew in nursing school. Review the symptoms, assume you have some potentially life threatening condition....
Not really. Just seems out of place that I'm not sleeping like I used too (unless it's age or too much sleep).

You're 16, unless you have a really crap medical history, or live downstream from a plant that dumps toxins into the city water, you are likely to be reasonably healthy.
A bit overweight. Been eating less and less to get my weight down. Nothing more other than going in to check on my throat itching like a :censored:er about once every year causing me to cough endlessly. Other than that, my nose has been stuffy for the past 1-2 months - causing me to roll a lot while trying to sleep.
