Ethernet cable to connect two computers

Hey guys, well i was thinking of ways to connect my laptop to my computer, the easiest way would be Firewire yes i know, but could u use a Ethernet cable to connect them?

Upload progreams from one computer then downlaoding the was taking WAY too long, for example one movie(630mb) would have taken about 6hours!! Maybe you can have the time for thst, but i my life is fast so, i can't be wasteing time with all that trouble.

If that doesn't work what could i do? Should i make my computer to be a FTP host and download everything when i get to school?(school has a T1 connection)

Thanks guys.

yes, you can use an ethernet cable to connect 2 computers, but it needs to be a "patch" cable. Normal Ethernet cables won't work because the twisted pairs of wires are meant to go to a router or hub, not directly into another computer. What ends up happening with a normal cable is that both computers are trying to "send" information on the same wire and they are trying to recieve information on a different wire. In order to communicate, one computer needs to listen on the wire that the other computer is sending on, and vice versa. All that needs to be done is to cut off the plug on one end of the ethernet cable and put another one on with the wires going into different slots. You could probably have an electronics shop do this for you.

Otherwise, if you have a hub or a router you can just plug both computers into there. Hope this helps!

Edit: tried to make this less confusing, but I don't think it worked

Edit 2: this link explains it a lot better than I do: http://www.lanshack.com/make-cat5E.asp

Thanks man that helped lots. But i don't think i want people to be slcining up my only cable so i guess i'll go with the FTP thing or if i can get some money, buy a fire wire,

It's not like patch cable is expensive. You can get a roll several feet in length for a couple of bucks.

Tried it... pain in my ass... hit or miss... I just use my External USB2.0 HD or my 512mb jumpdrive.

Also tried a USB data cable too.. sucks ass because of the software... 👎:grumpy:
