Hello again, GTPlanet.

There are more European exotics are told to be in GT4. And if they don't make it to GT4, then they will probably be in GT5. So I'm kind of wondering... what cars constitute as "European Exotics?"

You see, Gran Turismo 4 will be more than just another GT game. The series will look into the past of the history of the automobile. And if you ask me, it will be VERY entertaining to maybe look into a Ford Model T from WAY back (only people born around then were probably our great grandparents). But as I said, the topic is about EUROPEAN exotics, so the Model T doesn't count for a topic like this. It would be very interesting to take a look at cars from the past. I really like to thank Alain de Cadenet for his daredevil style with old European cars. The "Victory by Design" series features Ferrari, Porsche, Jaguar, Maserati, Aston Martin, and Alfa Romeo. I've seen the Speed Channel shows on them, and I can tell you, the European exotics, especially from the past, would be a joy to race. It would probably be even more interesting if you can have a "Goodwood Festival of Speed" style race series. Imagine a sort of hillclimb like with the point-to-point race, then the circuit race where cars of a certain era and type race at Goodwood and compete old-style. Then I can remember in 2003, I heard of the "Tour de France Auto." I think it was basically a classic car race around France. It's like the targa rallies, but you also race on circuits. So I don't know what would qualify as "European exotics." But for as much as I know, there were pretty few old cars from GT2 from Europe. One of the most beautiful of those in GT2 was the Aston Martin DB4. If you ask me, I was hoping for the 1955 Mercedes SL500 Gullwings, maybe some more MGs, the beautiful Jaguars of the 1960s and younger... I mean, I was a little disappointed to be honest. Some classic Alfa Romeos would also be good. Ferrari, Porsche, and Maserati licenses haven't been locked in yet, but to put them into the game including old classics, that's a 1-2 punch to a great game. For those who may have played that XBOX-only Mercedes-Benz game, you may know about old Mercedes cars. That Ginetta was made official some time ago for GT4. But after watching a Ginetta race car from the Monterrey Historics race last year, I seen a much-better looking Ginetta. This Ginetta, I think it's the G12, won the race. But if a lot of European exotics don't make it into GT4, here is something I'd suggest to Polyphony Digital for the next Gran Turismo (considering the game ships before the 2004 rendition of the Monterrey Historics), go out to the Monterrey Historics race and check out some of the old cars there. You want to trace back to the early days of the automobile, you need not look any further than some of the cars that raced at the track.

I'm watching Autorotica's coverage of Barrett-Jackson's highlights of a European Eotic known as the Allard J2 Cadillac. This was a car entered into the 1951 24 Hours of Le Mans. Beautiful green color, and it would make a very nice club racer. You could even go to the vinatage races with them. And in fact, you CAN vintage race because it has this little piece attached to the roll bar that makes it legal for US vintage racing. So, I'm not coming up with a European exotic wish list, but what would qualify as European exotics for GT4 and for GT5 years later?

I would love to see older exotics as well as classic european cars feature in GT4, like the Auto Union's and classic Jaguars. As for new cars, the more the merrier if you ask me but cars that would top my list would be the Koenigsegg CCR, Bugatti Veyron, Dauer 962, Ruf GT (the new Carrera GT rivalling supercar) and the TVR Sagaris and Typhon to name a few.

You're making reference to the article who also said porsche would be in...

OK why not... as we never know..

Let's first say that exotic is not classic.

I'd rather think they wanted to talk about car companies like Marcos or Ruf.

This is what exotic mean here in europe. you have the well know companies like porsche and ferrari : they are not exotic as they are recognised all over the world.

Donkervoort (sorry for the spelling) or TVR are making small productions which are not sold everywhere and even if they are known, they can not have the same status ferrari, VW or even Jaguar can have.

You have to look in this direction if you're searching what exotic means in this article...

Old classic cars or racing legends or even Jaguar are not exotic.

Hi,

I hate it when people "dump" loads of useless post in a forum, but this subject (classic and exotic cars) is something that has been fascinating me for years. The pre-90’s cars usually lack the electronic driving-assistant stuff like ESP, ALB, … This makes the driving/racing a lot more tricky, because the margin for error is smaller than nowadays.

IMO there are zillions of more or less “old” cars that deserve the titel of classic car. A car doesn’t have to be extremely fast, or extremely rare. There are several reasons that justify the label “classic” for a car. The old VW Beatle, Renault 4CV, Citroën 2CV, Ford Escort, Opel/Vauxhall Kadett… were the cars that were commonplace all over Europe for decades. They were affordable, more ore less reliable, and therefore were and are used to race with. On the other hand the number of real exotics is a lot smaller. Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz 300SL (Gullwing), Lambo, Porsche, Ferrari, Iso Grifo, De Tomaso, Maserati, . . . are fast, expensive, rare, beautiful cars that are beyond the financial reach of 99% of the world’s population. This fact makes them real exotics. They sure deserve the right to be in GT4. The game would lose a lot of it’s appeal without them, but there is more than between earth and sky than these supercars.

It would be a shame not to use this chance to include classic European sports cars like the Alfa Romeo GTA junior, Porsche 356 and the old 911’s, Austin Healey, BMW 2002, Matra, SAAB, MG A and B, Mercedes-Benz SL 190, Opel (Vauxhal) Manta, Lancia Fulvia, … They represent an era of great European automotive history. These Cars can be seen often in classic rallies and circuit race all over Europe.

There is a enormous difference between American and European classics, each with their pros and cons. I liked the Lotus Elans in GT2 with it’s small engines and extreme low weight. These cars could compete with a lot of modern cars with sometimes more than double the HP of the tiny Elans. It is also an hilarious sight to watch the replays when you raced the Elan against the huge US muscle cars.

I’m not really a muscle-cars enhousiast, but I can admire the distinctive sound that the big block engines produce. These babies mostly handle like wet towels IMO, but they are created in an other philosophy than the cars on this side of the ocean. I don’t think that they’re worse than European cars, but I don’t know them as well. And besides, Gran Turismo without muscle cars, is missing something.

Speed, price or even beauty are not caracteristics you can use to describe an exotic car.

Most of the cars you give as examples are classic cars as they represented something in the car history. ( A 2CV is also a classic!)

Exotic is is not something directly related to the car itself, it's more related to the company : You have the well known companies - every one knows - and the small companies. Only few people or car lovers are aware of as they have small / typical productions.

TVR is the best example of an exotic car manufacturer. A jaguar car is not exotic ! even if you talk about XJ220 (classic car)

I saw an Aston Martin DB5 outside my office a couple of hours ago. That hash to be in the game mish munnypenny!!

I wish the Lamborghini series would make it on the NTSC-US version. I'd love to drive the Lamborghini Miura, Contach and so on... :)

For me,any older sports car with a racing history would be fine by me.Wolud also love to see the old F1 cars from the cosworth era.70's to 80's.
