I definitely agree that it would be in our best interest to not try and fit in EVERYTHING, but instead to concentrate and key points of interest. I know my wife would like to see some of the architecture, art, and culture of Europe. I just want to hang out and relax. Maybe take a boat ride and cruse the country side. I'll be back to visit any more suggestions as well to get feedback on a possible itinerary.

-I've been to Europe a few times- you're right: don't try to squeeze everything into the one trip- it's much better to pick a short list of countries/ cities and spend a little longer in a place and try to immerse yourself in the culture/ history/ art etc.
-Don't be afraid to go to countries that don't speak English/ other languages that you might speak- it's a great experience, and you somehow manage to communicate anyway- it can actually be a great way to approach locals, who most often are friendly and helpful.
-As destinations, I would highly reccomend Spain and Portugal. Spain was at one stage the wealthiest country on Earth by a long shot, and much of that grandure remains in its art and architecture. Portugal is a little more laid back, and full of surprises. Highlights: Barcelona, Madrid, San Sebastian, Valencia, Cordoba, Granada and Ronda in Spain - Sintra and Lisbon in Portugal.

-Wherever you decide to go, I'm sure your life will only be enriched by the experience, so have a great time!

It would a tragic mistake to pass up Amsterdam. It has a "Red Light District" with window prostitution and "Coffee Shops" that sell pot. But, it's very easily avoided. "Cafés" sell coffee, and "Coffee Shops" sell pot, so you know.

Solid
And this is the kind of crap that scares off tourists.

not trying to create a debate here, but you said it yourself.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm leaving on Saturday for Amsterdam :), and no, I'm not going for the weed.

What I'm saying is that Amsterdam is (shamely) famous for all the wrong reasons. And I don't think Mrs. Pako would appreciate it if Pako comes up with the idea of going to Amsterdam, given the worldy reputation it has. I have no doubts that it must be a great city, matter of fact, my brother in law lives there and drives an ambulance, so he doesn't get high either.

Anyway, I'll tell you about Amsterdam in 10 days, when I return.

Again, the "Red Light District" is a very small part of Amsterdam that DOES NOT spill into the rest of the city. In fact, that's why it's there. So the rest of Amsterdam wouldn't be exposed to this kind of behavior.

To avoid Amsterdam because of this small area would be a HUGE mistake. Why do people dwell on this aspect of Amsterdam so much? Every major city in Europe will have a "Red Light District" known for its prostitution, drugs and adult themed fun. Are they to avoid all major cities of Europe, now? No Munich, Berlin, Rome, Paris, etc.

Mr. Pako, Mrs. Pako, baby Pako and teen Pako have nothing to worry about. Like I said before, they could never "accidentally" run into this area. There are many police to stop people who look like they don't belong there. A family would be one of them. The major tourist attractions I mentioned are not near this area of Amsterdam.

Putting an unnecessary fear into somebody is just not right, in my book. Especially when I KNOW what the truth is. There's absolutely NOTHING for the Pako Family to fear. I wouldn't be lying if I told him to avoid Paris. Crazy drivers, prostitutes, Anti-American attitudes, unfriendly Parisians who hate tourists coming into "their" city, etc. While that crap exists there, I doubt he'll be affected by it or even see it, if he goes there.

OK, that's it. I've said my peace. Besides, I think the fear has already gotten to him and he's made up his mind. :indiff:
