Eventful two days...PICS POST 18

Well I haven't been around here for awhile but felt like posting this. Yesterday while at work I accidentally shot myself in the right heel with a framing nail gun. It was a 3 in No. 8 ring shanked nail. In other words it was a 3 inch nail that had rings on it to prevent it from coming back out without substantial force. After going to my local docter and spending an hour and a half in non-stop excruciating pain they sent me to the E.R. with a refferal for immediate action. When I got to the E.R. they got an IV on me right away and doped me up with some morphine which took most of the pain away. So they get some X-rays and see the it's not going through any bones and might be able to pull it out right there. That didn't work just getting a screwdriver under the head of the nail almost knock me out. It was and is the worst pain I have every felt in my life, worse than getting hit and the face with a golf club which split a 1 inch slit through my lip. After finding this out they send me to surgery where it took 45 min and a pair of vice grips to get this nail out of my leg.

The nail had gone between the two bones in my leg and through my ankle and into a bone it my foot. It was in there so good that i could not move my foot at all with the nail in.


I am home now with some crutches and my ankle tightly wrapped. Half of my foot is still numb but hopefully it'll come back as my leg heals.

I shot my co worker this summer in the hand with a nail gun. Went clear through his finger and he pulled it out. I was more freaked out than he was though.
 
Damn. That sounds... scary...

Ouch. My brother once shot himself in the knee with a nailgun while laying shingles on a roof. He didn't have much fun either.
 
Yikes Silencer. Sounds painful. I always found it fun to walk with crutches. Have fun with that part.

My dad had to have two toes amputated a decade ago due to an accident at The Home Depot. A bunch of doors fell on him while he was walking by. Ended up crushing his foot. He walked with a limp for a few months but got over it after a while. He was kicking soccer balls and stuff as I remember something like a year afterward.

I once stood on an inch long piece of metal that went all the way in. I got pliers off the work bench, yanked it out and carried on. Bled a lot though.

But I think yours is worse. Chin up son. :)

I'm glad you're okay and I hope your foot makes a full recovery. I agree with Famine, though; NEEDS MOAR X-RAYS.

I don't have a copy of the X-rays right now. Hopefully I'll be able to get some the surgon tomorrow. If I do I'll post em up. Right now my foot is still numb in certain areas and there is no garuntee that it'll get better but I'm hoping it will. To give you mental picture the nail went in just above my shoe at a very steep angle downwards. That's how it ended up in my ankle/foot.


As to how I shot myself. It's complicated but I'll do my best to explain. I was walking with the gun and me being my stupid self I had left my finger on the trigger. I went to go under part of the deck which required me to crouch slightly. As I crouched I swung the nail gun behind me to keep from hitting it on stuff. Well the gun ended up making contact just above my right heel and since I had the my finger on the trigger it shot off the sencond it hit my leg because the saftey nose got pushed in by my leg. All in all it was operator error and I shot myself. No amount of saftey equipement would've stopped it from happening.


EDIT: Oh yea I talked to the surgon and he said he tried to see if my foot would move before he got the nail out and it was locked in place by the nail.

First of all, I'm a bit squeamish, so this probably wasn't a good idea to read...

Secondly, I'm glad you're doing better. Use the meds liberally while you have them, enjoy it while it lasts!

Yeah. Not only does he have a hole in his leg, a nail in his foot, but a nasty powder burn, also.

Nasty, painful injury. Reminds me of the time I broke my toe about a year ago. That was painful, too.

Yea had to do the rock on!

The camera was different distances from it. I was trying to get a few with stuff in the for people to guage the size by.

Wow man. Just wow. How'd ya like all the painkillers? I'd imagine you'd need some heavy doping to not be jiggling all over the hospital bed.

Yea all I can say is Morphine is goooooood.:sly: Oh yea and Percaset (sp?) works good too.

They gave me vicodin for my pain killer at home haven't had to use it though. My leg doesn't hurt nearly as much motrin takes care of the pain well.
