Everybody just take a deep breath

Why is it that some people seem to have nothing better to do than to chastize newbies and the sort for posting threads in the wrong place, starting threads about already covered topics, etc. THis, btw, I have noticed on all message boards, not just this one. If someone asks a question, just answer it! Don't put up a link and some snide comment about how this has been covered before. Suppose somebody doesn't want to wade through 200 pages of replies to see an answer! Everybody should just relax and let stuff slide.....

By the way, what's your favorite car?!?!

(just kidding....)

I think that this is in the wrong forum for starters  and noone has to go through 200 pages when they can Search for it. I dont think people want to keep repeating themselves so I think it is understandable when people get cheesed off about others asking the same question over and over when the same question may only be a couple of pages back!

My point isn't that people shouldn't use the search button, or try to post in the right area. My point is that people get way too upset about it when it does occur. Also, I have found the search button to be not as useful as I'd hoped on many occasions. Many times I get a search completed without result or a million topics that have nothing to do with what I searched for (for example, if you search for Gran Turismo 4, you get a nice message telling you that the number "4" is too short a word and it will do nothing. Conversely, if you put in Gran Turismo4, it will say there are no matches. Considering that this is probably the most searched term on this forum, you can see how worthless the search button can be. And yes I know that you have to search GT4, but many new ppl don't).

Also, many of the threads have over 100 responses. If just ONE of those responses answers your question, then yes, you will be searching blindly through several pages of posts to find that answer, which could take quite a while.

Again, people should try to post in the correct place, etc. But if they don't, it is not the end of the world folks! THere are much greater things to get worked up about (like GT4 being delayed again!)

The problem is that when that happens, much energy is wasted endlessly repeating the same information. "Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish..." comes into play here. If one person doesn't want to wade through old information to help himself, why should we want to answer what we used for the Polyphony Digital Cup for the 18th time to help him? If people are directed on how to help themselves, then they can do so, and discussions in general are free to go further than if 50% of everyone's time is wasted answering the same 5 questions repeatedly.

Agreed, the Search function is not perfect. But with a little effort, many questions can be answered by looking in existing threads. And rarely does somebody get jumped on for posting "I tried the Search button, but..."

It boils down to an attitude thing. Regulars are happy to help someone who demonstrates a little of their own effort. But people who don't look past the end of their own nose are lazy, and rely on the patience of others to answer their questions. Nobody wants to help that kind of person.

I agree. People like Neon_Duke and every practically go looking for people to repeat a topic. With 16000 users and about a billion topics it is impossible not to ask a question more than once. Nearly every topic has already been covered and people dont like when other people bring up old threads just let everyone especially the new users have their say about topics that "older" users may have exhausted.

I'm with majin here. tho sometimes it's easier to just jupm on the whole "go search" bandwagon. but it is the same where ever you go, they all say use the search.
what can you do hey?

The reason why some people get "jumped", or flamed, because of their laziness. Some questions have the answer in a thread below the one they just made. It's very annoying when it happens, and yes, it does happen. The more you have been here, the more it annoys you. The best way to stop it is to flame someone; let them know what they did was bad and it wont be tolerated.

If it happens, just apologize, and move on. It shouldn't be this big of a deal.

Let me make it clear that I did not start this thread because I was "flamed" for doing something wrong. I always use the search and have never posted anything in the wrong place. My reason for bringing up this point is simply that I feel there is an elitist quality to some of the posts I read here. People acting as though they are the gods of this message board and are not to be trifled with. I find that attitude both juvenile and disturbing. My point was only to say that maybe we should all be a little more considerate of our fellow GT enthusiasts here on the board. After all, we are all similar in that each of us has an undeniable love for the Gran Turismo series. Why not try and be courteous to each other; answer somebody's question (or don't). But don't spend your time getting so worked up over something as simple as an already disgussed topic. It's really not worth it.
