And they look better

Cheaper too

Back in 2005 Mitsubishi rolled out a concept version of a Lancer hatchback and less than a year later officials revealed the car was headed for production. Since then nothing much has been seen or heard of the new Lancer hatchback or the original Sportback Concept. That was until these drawings of a near-production Lancer hatch turned up.

Though we’re not sure if these images are official they do appear to follow the same lines as the previous Sportback Concept vehicle. Unlike the concept, the images depict a car with production style bumpers and lights and conventional exhaust pipes.

The new model is expected to join Mitsubishi’s lineup in the second half of the year, where it will join the sedan and performance Evo models in the midsized Lancer range. Expect to see similar powertrain options as in the sedan range, which means either four-cylinder petrol engines ranging from 1.5L to 2.4L as well as several petrol turbo and turbodiesel powerplants and of course a high-performance turbocharged 2.0L engine in an Evolution model.

Well, at least they're offering a Sedan version of the Evolution. the concept sketches look much meaner than the Subaru wagon, too.

Err...I mean, Hatchback.

I just hope it'll be better than the Impreza. I think it has potential to be a really good car. Maybe we'll see a more proper wagon version?

Maybe I'm stupid but hasn't the Evo always been a four door?

Sounds like a good idea, looks better than the STi hatchback/wagon thingamajig. Thing is, does Mitsubishi even have enough money to add another model right now?

Does anyone else think it loks way to bulky and heavy to be a nimble machine like the lancer always was?

The Sti wagon/hatch looks really nice in real life, you can tell that thing rips through corners, but this just looks like a Mazda 3 5-door with a bodykit, and 500 extra pounds.

The Lancer Evo X Sportback definitely looks better than the STi for sure. But in terms of performance, I can't help but say that Subaru has pwned Mitsubishi in that category (yes, I do liked the Evo more than the STi, but the results in the Best Motoring time attack does really show the weakness of the Evos.... :guilty:) But anyways, I'm quite interested how this would turn out. I mean its been to be competitive against the Imprezas in terms of sales.....

Well, seeing as how the current sedan is already a porker around old R34 weight, I can't see this being any lighter, so I don't think it'll magically outrun the STI.

Though, I would suspect the suspension tuning, like most wagons versus their sedan counterparts, to be a bit different. Namely, more stiff in the rear. That might make it more chuckable, maybe even faster around a course, so the weight gain might be offset.

Looks nice, though.

I dont' know...it seems to me like a little length might have been lopped off. That's what i'd have done if i were Mitsu: Pull a Gremlin and lop off the trunk.

then again, those are concept sketches, not the real deal.
