Wolfgang Eggers, the former head of design at Alfa Romeo, is to become head of design at Audi, taking over from Walter de'Silva, who has become the Volkswagen group design chief.

Eggers, 44, started at Alfa in 1989 before leaving for Seat in 1998; he returned to Italy to Lancia in 2001 before going back to Alfa, where he then created the 8C Competizione.

So now Audis are going to look as bad as B-9 Tribeca? And just when I thought they couldn't get a stupider nose...

Da Silva, the guy who had the position of this new guy also came from alfa, and will be this new guys boss.

Audis current design is a succes, as sales, and other manufacturers who have taking audi styling cues prove, so I hope they dont ruin things.

So, will Audi now stop trying to make it so plainly obvious that they have a new design direction, or will they continue to slap that ass ugly grill on otherwise very nice looking cars.

That... that... THING in your avatar is hideous. I don't care how well it sells, just like I don't care how much better the new 5 series sells than the old one did. Audi ruined the A series with the whalemouth - the A4 went from a car I'd love to have, to one that I would have to be utterly addicted to driving to be caught dead in.

We can only hope so.

Audi's (and VW, actually) previous design theory followed so much more form and made so much more sense as far as actual design works, but VAG overall ruined it all with the current lineup of ill-proportioned, fussy disformed figures. The newest Passat looks like a giant rolling sausage.

And to think they used to sell this (arguably the best looking car on sale at the time):

Now I am curious how much Italian styling will rub off onto Audi in the future, hopefully not like the Tribeca.

Personally, I like the current styling, except the Q7. SUVs do not look good in car skin. (like a really fat chick wearing really tight clothes. It just doesn't work). :yuck: I'll be interested in seeing what this guy can do for the company. I look forward to seeing his ideas in the coming years.

de Silva could make fairly attractive-looking cars, the problem was that he doesn't have much of a range. His Seat cars looked like Alfas, and his Audi designs looked like chromed Seats. And if anything (and as much as we all hate to admit it), a lot of companies have been taking bits and pieces of BMW's design, not Audi's. Last decade, yes, Audi was the target (and even a bit later, as the typically behind-the-times Ford proved with the Five Hundred), but the fussy detailing of modern German cars owes a lot more to Bangle and his crew than anybody else.

That said, I couldn't agree more with Duke; when the A8 came out, I couldn't believe how badly I wanted a large luxo-barge. Then they slapped the giant mouth on...

Oh well, this new guy has continued to keep Alfas beautiful (well, the Brera has some odd angles/proportions), so hopefully he can work his magic over at Audi while keeping in line with their styling heritage.
