It's one thing being quick on the track and another thing being quick on the road, as triple F1 world champion Nelson Piquet is discovering.

The Brazilian driver has had his driving licence revoked and is being sent to driving school for speeding and parking offences.

Piquet, who is 55 in August, had apparently been speeding around the streets of the Brazilian capital, Brasilia, in a variety of cars including a BMW convertible. His wife Viviane has also had her licence revoked.

The pair must attend a week-long course on safe driving, and pass an exam.

"I think we have to pay for our mistakes,"
said Piquet. "It's not just a speeding problem, I got tickets for all kinds of reasons, like parking where I shouldn't."

It's not a problem from which he ever suffered in Formula One. Unfortunately Piquet's son, Nelson Junior, won't be around to give his folks a lift – as Renault F1 test driver he's currently in Budapest ahead of this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix.

Oh I don't know about that. In terms of speeding, he was pretty quick in his early days, though certainly dismal when not motivated. As for parking where he shouldn't, he did his fair share of that in F1 too....

That sounds stupid......why would a 3 time F1 world champion would do that? And a famous one at that? They should give good examples to others, especially Piquet Junior. He may end up doing the same thing in the near future as well.....

Very true, but at the same time, I'm less concerned about an ex (or current) F1 driver who knows a bit about about car control and planning ahead speeding than I am about some averagely talented driver who is speeding without thinking because their car feels "well planted".

at least he didn't kick any police officers, like he did with Eliseo Salazar. A memorable moment in F1 history

The guy is an ass, not the type to give good examples. Awesome F1 driver though.

at the risk of sounding ignorant as fudge, what do u mean by well planted???

It's an expression I often hear to describe a car which feels stable at high speed, usually on a motorway. Sometimes used as an excuse for travelling at extremely high speeds in adverse conditions (e.g. 140mph in rain) and usually describing a luxury car with a long wheelbase... i.e. cars which disguise their speed well.

Similar to "four-square". I think.
