Do any of you ever get bored of lapping the entire field in Bahrain etc and try to spice it up a bit?
Well as a personal challenge I decided I would do the following:
Run a race at Monaco, 50% distance (37 laps I think) in a McLaren (hard AI difficulty of course), from the back of the field on a 3 stop strategy, and not accelerate off the start line til the yellow flag appears so you can't jump half the field at the first corner (giving them about a 5 second head start).
This was going well for the first 3 laps, managing to get past several cars but then I lost my front wing and had to pit. I thought this might actually work out alright since I would be in clear air and could bang in some fast laps and leap frog those ahead of me at my next pit stop, the only drawback being that I was now fueled heavily on soft tyres. Then disaster struck, about 7-8 laps in I lose my front wing AGAIN, even worse was that I was fueled for only 28 laps of the 30 remaining meaning I would need a splash and dash literally about 1 lap from the end and I would be fueled even more heavily for a 28 lap stint on soft tyres, they would be shot coming up to the end. So I thought again this might not be too bad as I could pit earlier than normal, say with about 14 laps to go to balance out the tyre wear between my 3rd and 4th stints.
Well I blasted around for another 10 laps or so until I get nudged from behind and spin taking my front wing off yet again! So I pitted for my final stop with a full 20 laps remaining, so I had no choice but to run my final few laps on knackered tyres.
However, I found myself in clear air for the most part for about 8 laps and banged in a succession of sub 1:12's managing a 1:10.5 for the fastest lap still with about 10 laps of fuel and green tyres. Dispersed through the race were at least 3 time penalties for various offenses between cutting corners at turns 11 and 16. Still I had the speed to catch the leaders and did so overtaking teammate Montoya for 3rd was a hairy moment as I dived downt he inside of him at turn 15 and then he clipped me coming back into turn 16 very nearly spinning me and ending it all. Still I ploughed on, passed Fisichella with 4 laps to go and then Schumacher on the penultimate lap down the main pitstraight. I just coasted around the final lap knowing I'd done enough to win. The last few laps were very hairy indeed, the colour of my rear tyres had turned dark yellow and the car became very nervous and oversteery through Casino, Mirabeau, Portier, the entrance to the chicane after the tunnel at turn 10 and the final turn 19, Anthony Noghes. So I had to nurse the car through these corners as it constantly twitched and veered towards spinning into the barrier.
So in total, between 3-4 time penalties, 3 extra front wings, an extra pit stop over the leaders and a 5 second set back at the start, I had to make up about 55 seconds on the leader.
