This is a question for F1 fans in Britain.
My dad occasionally goes to England on business. I want to ask him to get an F1 model car for me the next time he goes. (I've never seen any F1 models here in Trinidad.) I would want one of the new McMercs or Renaults. In terms of older F1 cars, I would want an early 90's Williams or McLaren, or a late 90's Ferrari or McLaren. (All in 1:18 scale, of course).

Are they easy to find in cities like Manchester and London? And are the F1 cars I've specified being sold?

Yes, they're quite easy to find, the cars you want do exist but the 2006 F1 models are yet to be made. The earliest car last year was the Renault R25 which Hotwheels released August-ish.

Don't Tamiya still make the die cast models? Or do you have to go through team merchandise. I used to have a Benetton(sp) die cast and a Jordan in 7-up livery.

Any proper toy shop will sell them, yes. As GTRacer4 says, you won't get the '06 cars yet.

You can also mail order them (try Grand Prix Legends), but shipping to Trinidad may hurt!

There's a few in London, but I don't know about Manchester, although I'd imagine there is somewhere.

Try yell.com - it's the Yellow Pages website - the Yellow Pages being basically a great big list of shops and how to contact them. Type in "Model shops" in the Search for and London in the location bar; there's quite a few scattered around. There's a Modelzone in London and 2 in Manchester; I visit their branch in Basingstoke fairly often. Expect to pay around £40 for a new Renault, and anything from that up to about £60 for some of the older cars. I know the Basingstoke Modelzone have a few old Williams and Mclarens - Mansell and Patrese's FW14s are £45, I think Senna's 1993 Mclaren is about the same, and I'm sure I saw Senna's 94 Williams there too for about £55ish.

One other thing: how would your dad go about getting them back to Trinidad? 1:18ths aren't exactly light - about 2kgs (?) each, which'll hurt the hand luggage, and they're quite large boxes, which means leaving plenty of room in the suitcase when he's packing. Just a thought.

Also, look in this thread for more info on 1:18ths in general (might be best to go straight to the last few pages, there's nearly 2 thousand posts in it:))

Hope that helps.

Edit: not sure what the currency is in Trinidad, so here's http://www.xe.com/ucc/, which is a useful currency converter.

on a sidenote, I don't recommend the hotwheels versions of the models... the quality and detail of those are pretty bad (IMHO)... go with the Minichamps ones...

I have a hot wheels Williams FW27 i think it is..might be an FW26 (the one with the tusk nose) only cost £20 and i dont think its too bad in terms of detail.

well I'm rather picky with my models, but its the little details that I notice... like the suspension, the brakes, the surface textures of the car's bodywork, etc... ultimately if given the choice and budget, I say go with Minichamps... unless you want ferrari, since hotwheels have the rights to them...
