Teams that get through to Qualifying 3 will receive an extra set of option tyres. Those drivers will start the race using the tyres that they set their best Q2 time with.

"It looks like there is going to be a tweak to qualifying this year, to prevent the scenario of some teams not running in the top 10 shoot-out in order to save tyres for the race. F1's strategy group - the new rule-making body, effectively - has proposed that those in Q3, as it is called, get an extra set of 'option' tyres for use only in that session.

"Drivers will now have to start the race on the set of tyres on which they set their best time in the second part of qualifying. The teams' sporting directors were asked if there were any major problems with the idea and when they met on Friday they agreed that while they had a couple of minor comments, there were no big issues and it would do what was intended. So expect that to be formally adopted as a rule at the next strategy group meeting on Friday."

This wouldn't be a problem if F1 still had single lap qualifying, it would also give small teams like Sauber TV time for their sponsors so they wouldn't be as bankrupt.

I missed single lap qualifying, I could watch every driver perform their best whilst the tv commentators telling facts about him.
Now in 3 staged qualifying I usually don't bother to watch Q1 and Q2 because it's always seems like a formal ritual to Q3. only little surprises will happen there.. and even in Q3 the excitements are only at the 2 minutes before the cheq flag.

I still remember this gem from Christijan Albers in 2005, just great.

Why have the 3 qualifying sessions in the first place, its just robbing the slower teams of tracktime, less sponsor airtime, which just hobbles them even more, bring back the single lap shootout but have a session before it to decide the order they run in

Because previously there was a 1-hour window but most of the teams would wait for the last few minutes to run. The slower teams got no TV time at all unless they were one of the very few early runners.

I like this, this brings more spec racing to the back of the field. Fact of a matter here is those back Teams still spend a ton of cash and if this rule would of came sooner we could of probably saved HRT since they could of still sold company advertising rights on their cars for more endorsement money to keep the Team running or actually keep it more enticing for another Team driver to buy and use. Better that then it collecting show room dust right now. This 1 rule could be the start if increasing the grid which most people want in the end.
