F1 Showdown Part II: Monaco

After edging out Schumi's 2004 pole lap at Suzuka, I've decided to challenge the F1 crew again at Monaco. This time around it was Jarno Trulli who set the 2004 pole lap of 1:13.985. Current fastest in the GTP leaderboard is 1:15.214.

My fastest from this session was 1:15.457, and I kissed the wall on the enterance to the tunnel on that lap. My roommate smashed my time with a 1:14.308 before the session was cut short by an overheating PS2. So, we are still 0.323 off. However, faster is possible and I wouldn't be suprised to squeeze out a 1:12.500. My setup is below, my roommates setup and shots of the fast times will follow once the PS2 is back up and running.

Very nice! I like this whole idea. Looking forward to more updates, and hopefully a defeat of Trulli by a GTP member. Maybe I will try my luck once I unlock an F1 car. :D

Well this evening's session didn't go much better than earlier today. I managed a 1:14.908 with a few minor errors. Good enough to bump Monte Carlo resident David Coulthard out of the top 10.

A note on the setup, if your using the auto-gear ratios, 10 has you almost redline (sometimes over, depending on your entry into the tunnel) at the end of both straights. However, 11 throws off your braking entering the Nouvelle chicane. I still haven't found a setup I am 100% satisfied with, but such is Monaco. :boggled:

You shold be able to beat it by atleast 1-2 seconds, as you can be more dare-ing in a game

Trulli's pole has fallen. I just put up a 1:13.453 after doing countless 1:14s. I don't have time for a full write-up right now, but more later. Radicool02, come talking that **** when you've done a 1:14 at Monaco. While I can "afford" to be riskier, if you push too hard at Monaco, you WILL get taxed and the lap time will reflect that... :sly:

A lap of Monaco with Jenson Button:

"The lap starts with the entry into the Sainte Devote corner, where I brake from 270kmh in top gear to bring the speed down to less than 90kmh in second gear. This corner is one of the few that has some run-off area so therefore I can push a little bit harder into it."

"Exiting the corner there is a long climb up the hill. By the end of it I reach 260kmh in top gear before entering the long left-hand corner, which I take at around 125kmh in third gear. This immediately leads into the tricky Casino corner, where I continue to hold third gear, turning right and going over the crest of the hill at around 120kmh. At this point the car goes very light and it's very easy to lose control."

"On exiting the corner I go downhill towards the Mirabeau hairpin where I reach about 250kmh in fourth gear, before braking for the hairpin itself. Braking here is very difficult as the road has a lot of camber and it is very easy to lock a wheel. I take the corner in second gear at just under 70kmh and then hold second gear, reaching 150kmh before braking hard again for the Loews hairpin, which is the lowest part of the circuit. At this point I drop right down to around 45kmh for this very tight left-hand corner and remain in second gear all the way down the hill, taking the first right-hand corner at 70kmh and then the second corner into the tunnel at 75kmh."

"Going through the tunnel it can be quite difficult to control the car, particularly on a heavy fuel load, as there are some significant bumps and fast corners. Coming out into the daylight again I touch the maximum speed of just under 290kmh, before braking hard for the chicane at the bottom of the hill. I enter this chicane in second gear at about 60kmh, before tackling the short straight where I reach 230kmh."

"I enter the Tabac corner - which for Monaco is judged as a fast corner - in fourth gear at 140kmh. Immediately after this, there is a fast chicane that forms the first part of the swimming pool complex, where I again use fourth gear and take the chicane at around 170kmh. The second part of the complex is much slower and is taken in second gear, the first part being at 70kmh then accelerating and taking the second apex at 90kmh. The next corner is La Rascasse, the second slowest corner on the circuit, which has a very difficult entry as I have to brake hard whilst negotiating the left-hand turn which proceeds it, also getting my speed all the way down to 50kmh and selecting first gear."

"The exit of the corner is just as difficult as the entry, as it is very hard to find traction on this part of the circuit. A very short straight then leads into the final corner which I take in second gear at about 70kmh and, as with most of the corners at the circuit, I will be getting extremely close to the barriers on the exit."

A note about the setup, I was apparently mixed up on my bound/rebound settings. I was under the impression that 10 was the hardest and 1 was the softest, when in fact the reverse is true. I haven't made the changes, but I'm already pretty confident this will take care of the problems I was having both here and at Suzuka with stiffness or lack there of. I am reasonably sure that a 1:10 is possible...
