I was wondering since the older drivers have past and gone (either retired or passed away) do their children follow their footsteps or do they even go into different motorsports altogether? And even if they follow in their fathers/uncles footsteps,do they perform quite to their expectations?Well in this thread, you can give comment and criticism about drivers who are related to a famous driver in their family.

Just take the McRaes for example,Jimmy McRae started rallying and Colin and Alister followed his footsteps and became rally drivers as well.As for the Scheckters,Jody Scheckter was famous in Formula 1 when he won the championships in 1979 but his son, Tomas Scheckter is racing in the Indy Racing League.

Note:I don't know if this will be a good thread so i hope anyone could help me out with this thread if anything arises.I'll try and make a drivers list on the weekend if you want....(sorry for the bad title, just help me out here if you can.....)

Ill take the Villeneuves.

Gilles = god, nutter, unearthly fast, family man,

Jaques= total opposite of above

Hmmm.... I'll be the redneck and say

The Earnhardts!

Dale Sr. = Best. NASCAR racer. Ever.

Dale Jr. = Really good, just no where near the way his dad raced.

NASCAR
Lee Petty
Richard Petty son of Lee
Kyle Petty grandson of Lee son of Richard
Adam Petty great-grandson of Lee grandson of Richard son of Kyle (Adam passed away in May 2000 during a pratice session at New Hampshire racetrack)

The McRae's are a good example mnm_bmx.

There are the Rosberg's. Keke was an F1 world champion and his 22yr old son Nico is currently in his second F1 season not doing too bad for himself. Also in F1 there has been Graham Hill(looks a bit like The Godfather on his Wiki page) a two time F1 champion and his son Damon Hill who also is an F1 champ

I'll see your Rosbergs and raise you the Brabhams. Sir Jack (father) and 3 racing sons Geoff, Gary and David. Away from circuit racing and back to WRC there's Malcolm and Matthew Wilson. Must be quite handy if your dad runs a WRC team eh?

Gilles = fast.

Jaques 1 = made a few Can-Am appearances.

Jaques "New Town" = Indy 500 Champ, CART Champ, F1 Champ. Family man... is he not? Future NASCAR flop.

The Hornish family in the IRL, I believe, dates back to Jr.'s grand father.

And there's a family of racers in ALMS. I don't know which team it is, or if they're still going, but son used to drive the GTs with his father.

I'll see all of yours and I'll raise you, Mario, Michael, Jeff & Marco (And I'm not even mentioning, John, Mario's nephew.)

Wasn't it supposed to be Adam Petty?Like he did crash straight on into a wall at New Hampshire International Speedway. The throttle of his car got stuck and sent him head-on into a wall in was instantly killed.

Well i did a research about some F1 drivers on wWkipedia and found out about Jenson Button.

From Wikipedia:
Jenson Button was born on 19 January 1980, in Frome, Somerset, England. He is the son of former Rallycross ace John Button (well-known in the UK for his so-called Colorado beetle Volkswagen and his Autoconti Tuning garage at Trowbridge, Wiltshire), whose best overall results was to become the runner-up in both the Embassy/RAC-MSA British Rallycross and TEAC/Lydden Rallycross championships of 1976.Jenson’s parents are divorced, and he has 3 older sisters.

I didn't even know his father was in rallycross

To add an antipodean flavour to things:

Dick Johnson is a five-time Australian Touring Car Champion and a three-time winner of the Bathurst 1000. His son Steven is now racing for Dick Johnson Racing.

Is it just me or do the next generations never quite match the skills of the first?

Yes, it was Adam Petty who died at 19 years of age. His incident made the kill switch now a mandatory item in Nascar. Adam died just months after his great grandfather who lived to see his debut race at Texas Motor Speedway during the DirecTV 500 (Lee died 3 days later).

I was going to mention the Brabhams or Andrettis but since I am also a speedway fan I'll mention the Kinsers. Steve Kinser is the sprintcar God. He has won 20 WoO Championships and twelve Knoxville Nationals. His son Kraig is an accomplished sprintcar racer, also a winner of the Knoxville Nationals and is now racing Craftsman Trucks. Steve's cousin Mark is a successful speedway racer winning three Knoxville Nationals and two WoO Championships and another cousin, Sheldon, has competed in the CART series and has raced in the Indiaapolis 500 six times. Steve's distant cousin Karl is a legendary team owner and mechanic winning nineteen WoO championships and twelve Knoxville Nationals.

1976 F1 World Champion James Hunt's son Freddie has just embarked on a motor racing career. Hunt also has a brother, who's name escapes me, who raced at a fairly high level.

1992 F1 World Champion Nigel Mansell has two son's, Greg and Leo who are both racing drivers.

Ooh, good one. Possibly the best yet.

I toss out for consideration the Unsers (grats to Wikipedia):

Alfred Unser (born May 29, 1939 in Albuquerque, New Mexico) is a former American automobile racing driver, the younger brother of Bobby Unser and father of Al Unser, Jr.. He is the second of three men to have won the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race four times, the fourth of five to have won the race in consecutive years, and is the only person to have both a sibling (Bobby) and child (Al Jr.) as fellow winners. Al's brother Jerry and nephews Johnny and Robby have also competed in the 500.

His father Jerry Unser and two uncles, Louis and Joe, were also drivers. Beginning in 1926 they competed in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, an annual road race held in Colorado.

Joe Unser became the first member of the Unser clan to lose his life to the sport, killed while test-driving a FWD Coleman Special on the Denver highway in 1929.

Al's oldest brother Jerry became the first Unser to drive at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, qualifying 23rd and finishing 31st in the 1958 Indianapolis 500. However, tragedy struck the next year when he was killed from injuries sustained in a fiery crash during a practice session.

Middle brother Bobby drove in his first Indianapolis 500 in 1963, becoming in 1968 the first member of the family to win, and in 1983 son Al Unser Jr. drove in his first.

Can't believe you brits forgot this father-son duo:

Graham Hill - Le Mans winner, Indianapolis winner, F1 champion

Damon Hill - F1 Champion

David

Jackie Stewart's son Paul was a fairly decent F3 & F3000 driver, but he seemed better suited to team management than driving.

I didn’t want to do it because Bruno has yet to achieve anything much, but I’ll mention Bruno and Ayrton.

I don't think Bruno has anything like the talent of Ayrton. Also, he's nephew rather than son, isn't he?

Also, Mathias Lauda seems not to have inherited his father's genes.

Family with racing blood, right? ;)

And yeah, Bruno had something like 10 years out of the seat after Ayrton died, didn’t he? But before his death I know Ayrton said that he regarded Bruno as a driver who had the potential to do as well as, or better than him.

*Famine fears self-assplosion if he has to explain that Jacques Villeneuve can only be Jacques Jnr. if he's the son of Jacques Villeneuve - which he isn't. They are Jacques Villeneuve I and Jacques Villeneuve II*

*Famine self-assplodes*

 I didn't even notice the "Jnr" until you mentioned it.
