A film about Americans, set in Japan (which should get fanboys like F.Zamataki going nicely) with an Oscar for writing (original screenplay).

The film confuses me - there's little in the way of character-building, direction, plot, or ending. I was curious as to who would pitch this film and who would give them money for it. But it turns out it's by Sofia Coppola and produced by Francis Ford Coppola - so not that surprising really.

As I've mentioned, there's not that much in the way of anything in the film - it's just a story about two people in a "weird" place who get to know each other and leave. None of the extraneous gets in the way and the two lead actors - Bill Murray and Scarlet Johansson - do a sterling job of keeping you interested.

There is no pace to the film, but that's no bad thing. It's just a relatively pleasant story, unhindered by anything else. Allegedly the "story" is of Sofia herself (in the Scarlet Johansson part) with Bill Murray playing the part of Harrison Ford. Don't let it bother you.

Don't expect explosions and a passionate affair. Don't expect a Lynch-level baffling. Just expect a story.

 I thought oh yeah this is gonna be good if Famine or Daan created this. Anyway, yeah... for some reason, some how it keeps your attention. It's slow as hell and there's nothing too it, yet it seemed to work. :odd: Go figure?

I thought that as well, it's a good film, it's very well acted and very well scripted and good use of the camera but when you try to explain what happens in it, you can only say it's about two people in Japan who meet up, become friends and then go off in their own dircetions again. I guess the point was, Bill Murry who played a famouse film star doing promoting alcohol in Japan wasn't happy with his life \nd when he became friends with Scarlet Johansen he was happy, but they were only close friends by the end of it they wernt intimate or anything so it's not a love story.

Did you watch the end of the film? - it is a love story, he ends up following her through the streets of tokyo then it hints that he askes her to meet him in New York!

I saw the end but I didn't notice him hint anythingto her.

Without wishing to give any of the ending away, he kisses her then whispers something we don't hear into her ear.

I liked this one. Lots of excellent acting (Murry should have taken home the trophy). It's on a level of realism that few movies achieve and bill murry has some very funny moments.

Yes, the actors just fit perfectly in their roles for that movie. Bill plays himself, and Scarlet was dating a men about twice her age at the time.

Of the movies I've seen so far this year, this one is my favorite. Nice, simple story that isn't forced in a sad, heartbreaking end, or a lalala happy ending to a please its audience. I like that.

yeah, wierd movie with nothing to it, yet it's interesting. you just keep watching. and the hell does he say at the end!!!!!?????
