What kind of signs does it give before going?

I'm sure mine is about to go, I went a while without playing PES5 and when I go back to a screen it stutters a little. It seems to be slower in general, struggles amore with GTA:SA than any other game.

Is it dying?

Listen for a sort of loud ticking noise while the disc is spinning/loading, something like "chikka chikka chikka chikka chikka chikka chikka chikka chikka chikka..."

Long load times are another indication, and when it starts getting worse, you'll periodically get disc-read-errors. Eventually, certain games will only work when the PS2 is in a certain position (horizontal, vertical, diagonal...upside-down horizontal is the only way I can get Rez to work).

Cleaning/adjusting the laser can help, but it's only prolonging the inevitable. Eventually, cleaning/adjusting the laser will have no effect. Trust me on this -- my friends and I collectively own 3 black, rectangular paperweights. For a while, two of them were just sitting next to each other on the floor in my room, near the trashcan. It's rather interesting to think back several years to the time when a PS2 was seen as a sleek, new, amazing, unobtainable thing.

I wouldn't bother faffing about inside, I'd just get a 360, going to the darkside, but I'll be damned if I spend £500 on a PS3.

If most of the issues arise due to laser issues, would HDAdvance help? I've had it for a while and so far it has worked flawlessly. It still requires the laser to read the disc at the initial load, but after that kicks over to the hard drive. I havn't tried it, but I think HDAdvance can also be run off of a memory card, skipping the laser altogether.

To save starting another thread....

4 months on (nearly 5) my PS2 has finally given up the ghost, it hasn't stopped working but all the discs skip like mad and make it completely unplayable/unwatchable/ I'll use a laptop for my DVDs and wait for the PS3 to come out for a new console. Mind you 4 years of consistent use isn't bad.

My first Playstation 2 had the very same problem (especially the heavy ticking during GTA:VC). DVD's worked fine for some reason... but I couldn't play games at all. The console only lasted about 2 years, which was a bummer.
Luckily my second PS2 (In sleek silver B) ) came free with a television we purchased, and I haven’t had any problems since.

Ahhh... My first and only PS2 is indeed dying on me! For starters I have to jiggle the A/V input to get it to show sound... and it chikkas like mad!

Oh, and It refuses to play any GT4 disc.... :( 🤬

Only problem ive had since i bought a ps2 when it came out is the power supply went out on it. Cheap and easy fix, think it cost me all of about 17 dollars for a new one and about 7 mins of repair. Cant complain here. I do have HDLoader, love it...dont know about running it off a mem card though.

My PS2 which ive had from day one it came out, has been doing the chikka-chikkka for a while, but only during GTA:SA. AND, of course, GT4 only loads occasionally.
But you know what? Its been serving me for so long that I dont blame it. Ive played several hundreds of hours of GT and GTA so I think I got my money worth. Really. Think its as simple as wearing it out. Doesnt matter how many times I clean it anymore, its just tired of the what I put it through....
At some point its done. Im just waiting for its younger brother to release and drop in price and he can go to sleep... :sly:

I've mentioned this in another thread: My slimline has previously given me problems with GT4, and some movies. It worked fine with EVERY other game we own. I finally got an alcohol pad, and a q-tip, and very carefully cleaned the laser eye. GT4 has been flawless since.

My old style PS2 got to the point that it wouldn't open and close reliably. And it had issues playing GT3 (Which is why I bought the slimline in the first place). My youngest son has futzed with it and now it works for most of the games they play.

Now my worry is getting the proper memory card back when I want to to play.

So I put F106 in earlier and it works fine! Perhaps it's just DVDs that don't work. Is that possible?

My first PS2 died on me after i played GTA-SA 2 hours on it's pal release day.
I got a new PSTwo from my parents and i haven't had a problem yet.

Try cleaning the laser. Mine stopped reading certain discs (general ones in less that perfect shape). I just took teh PS2 apart, got a cotton swap stick thing, a little water with mild soap, wiped the dust off the laser, dried it off with another cotton stick thing, and then put it back together. No problems since except with one burned CD someone had.

Its not that hard to take apart, you just gotta be careful. I've taken my PS2 apart several times, but I also have the older, larger model...
