(I apologize in advance if this has been posted before. But I did a search and came up with nothing. Well... I sort of gave up after page 5 or so.)

Would any of you be interested in doing a Fast Lap Challenge? Pretty simple... everyone runs a track and posts their best time.

Still not sure about rules. Maybe people who are interested can pitch ideas? We can have it as open ended as we want... or as controlled.

For now here's what I've thought of:

Cars allowed: Whatever you want. I have a feeling folks will mostly choose the F094/S, R390, GT-One, Escudo, etc.

Tuning: Again, your choice. The idea is to get the fastest lap time possible, so folks should be able to tune to their liking. Or maybe we can have it cars run on default tuning?

Tires: Your choice.

Tracks: We'll do Free Run in Arcade Mode. And have everyone lap around 1 track per week (or X number of days). So we'll do Super Speedway, then Midfield, etc, etc. We can throw in Rally and Wet tracks, too.

Lap Times: Everyone does 10 laps around the track. You pick your best lap time and post it.
Can also take all 10 lap times and average them to see who the most consistent driver is. Or just take the fastest time for those 10 laps.

I was thinking we could award points... and have an all around winner at the end (both for Fastest Lap and Fastet Average Run). But it could be a little difficult since the number of entries could fluctuate.

Results: You can take photos or videos of your results of you're able to. Lap videos are fun to watch, so those who can are encouraged to. If not... try not to cheat and be honest about your times. I think there'll be a general range of lap times per track... so it'll be suspicious if someone's lap time is considerably faster than everyone else's.

Thoughts?
*shrug*
Could be fun.

Um.... Your own choice of car? That's not a really good idea as the lap times will not be accurate.

Here's an idea:
Keep your own car idea but put them into different catagories eg. Formula 1 cars, JGTC Cars etc. That should incorporate less confusion too.

Another one
When people post their times they should put the car they use down too. That way we can see what people can really do.

These are just ideas. Wether this goes on or not I'm in. I'll do it. Me and My trusty RUF RGT

I think this should be in the online racing forum.

Welcome to GTP, SouL ;)

Here's a post I put up, originally at the GTF then at the GTX about Race Adminning:

New Race Admins...Read this!

In my "travels" around the many OLR forums, I've noticed a lot of rookies posting new races. Some have been pretty good "seeds" for new races, some have been...well...not so good. A couple of launched series have gone on with a degree of success, and some others have of died the dreaded "sinking thread from lack of interest" syndrome.

I've been fortunate to have raced in some very well planned series (TORC and JGTC among many others), and was very fortunate to have inherited the Formula Series during its genesis, as well as the original IROC series. Along the way, I've chatted with many of the top Race Admins here, as well as some of the other premier OLR boards, such as HGT, GTP, GT3T, and Raceline.

I'd like to open a discussion about Race Planning for the benefit of Rookie Admins. This is a discussion and not the actual planning of any events, or a method of "structuring" the GTX/GTF OLR for any future series. I'd like to see some of the Veteran RA's post their comments as well, in the hopes of providing Rookie RA's with the benefits of some of the accumulated knowledge and experience from the GTX/GTF OLR.

A good way to start planning your first series is to first look through the following threads:

GTX OLR Info and FAQs

and

The GTX On-Line Race Series Index

These two threads will provide a guideline for developing a new series, from rules to car types to race formats. Look through the Race Series index, especially, to see if an idea you have has already been done.

Once you've "armed yourself " with information, start planning your race. IMHO a good start is with a Spot Race, that is a single race, on one track, with a limited number of cars. Pick a track you think would be interesting, then make some decisions about the cars for your race:

Will it be with Arcade Cars or Sim Cars?

If Arcade cars, which class or classes? Will the entire class be open, or just a few select cars?

If Sim cars, will it be stock "street" cars, or fully modded race monsters?

Do you tune the car yourself, posting the settings/mods for the race, or do you allow the drivers to have a hand in it. Or is it "stock" only?

Once you've decided cars and track(s), then it's time to test:

How do the selected cars do at the selected track(s)? Are there any cars with an obvious advantage? How can the advantage be balanced?

Do a lot of testing here. Get a pad of paper and take notes. Run lots of laps, to average out the lap time of a particular car. Play with the tuning. Maybe a lower horsepower car can whip one with more "grunt" because it handles better, or has better tire wear.

Now, format your race. What will you call it? Is it a "Free Run" flying lap contest, or is a race run at one of the Sim series/Rallies?

As a suggestion here, for a first Race try to avoid the Sim/Pro or Endurance races, as they tend to run 10 to 20 laps (more for the Enduros), and many drivers will not want to put that much time into a Spot Race.

Are there any "Special" rules to make the race more interesting? Be sure to be very clear about anything like this. Nothing will kill a signup quicker than ambiguous or confusing/conflicting rules.

How will the race be scored? Obviously in a Spot Race, fastest time wins, but if it's a multi-lap Spot Race, you may want to recognize "Fastest Lap" or "Most Consistent T2 time" to raise the interest of your drivers.

Finally, be very clear about race "no-no's" such as 2 wheels on track, wall banging, or AI bashing.

Now, Run your race, against yourself. Write down results. If you have a buddy whom you iLink or splitscreen with, have them run a simulation of the race. Talk to other RA's. Ask questions here. Get comfortable with what you intend to do.

Now, on paper, organize your "Signup & Rules" post. Put it in an outline form so that each section or issue is very clear and easy to understand. Consider possible "questions" from your drivers, and be able to anticipate the answers within the framework of your "planning" sessions.

Once you are satisfied, Post your Race Thread! Then monitor it carefully, to make sure you are punctual with answers to questions, with updating Driver lists, and to just show your drivers a "Take charge" presence in your thread!

One last note...

One of the most respected RA's I know told me once that a Race is "about the drivers." It is for them and should appeal to what interests them enough to signup and race in your series. The main thing is that your drivers should have fun. That's why we do this...

I left the GTX links in, because there is some good info there, as well.

As far as your idea, try trimming it down a bit. As it is, it's pretty broad and in addition to the confusion among the drivers as to what and where to run it would be a logistical nightmare to score...

Looking forward to seeing what you can come up with.

Cheers,

NQ
