Faster than it Feels

After playing GT3 for a while I can definitely tell that some cars even at the same speed feel slower than other cars. I can't say why, exactly, but this happens.

The question: Which cars in this game are faster than they feel while driving? And why?

For me it's any of the NSX's. They're smooth and quiet. I kind of don't like driving them because they feel TOO smooth and TOO in-control.

It's the 3d engine for the game. They didn't do that great of a job with the incremental aspect ratio, so you are going way faster than it 'feels'.

That feeling of speed is somewhat relative to acceleration, also. So the R34 may feel faster than the Supra because it reaches it's top speed faster.

Just a thought.

That and the fact you're on a wide track, rather than a narrow, traffic-filled road, you are unable to experience any form of peripheral vision to tell your brain you're going fast and there is no direct sensation due to gravity.

Games are limited in the amount of reality they can convey. You'd be better off blaming the human brain for it's inability to be fooled than PD for the 3D engine.

yes, narrower tracks would help...

It was a figure of speech. As pertaining to knowledge or understanding of how fast you are going in relation to how quickly scenery is passing by.

If you were going 100km/h on Cote d'Azur, it would feel alot faster than it would on Test Course, simply because there is more scenery.

You obviously think that the NSX is that bad? Think again, novice. The NSX is very fast at the hands of a professional. If you tune it well enough, that thing will be a incredible hellion. For grip drivers it is very good to manage control but for the drifters they will not have so much luck because I heard before that MR cars are the hardest to drift.

I am not leveling you down, sgruenbe. I am just giving you the corrections.

If you played EA's Formula 1 games, F1 2002 or F1 Career CHallenge, race on Monaco(Cote Da Azur). It it much wider in GT3 than the Formula 1 games. When the Monaco GP comes up, look at the track.

Hard to imagine.

But GT3's Cote d'Azur is not actually the Monaco GP track. It's an "interpretation" of it - I don't believe PD had rights to Monaco - hence the name change.

Brilliant! Futurama is the best stuff ever!

There are so many things you could quote from Futurama (especially Bender).

I KNOW the NSX is fast and I can drive it fast, but it's so smooth and quiet that its speed is deceptive. And, if anyone's keeping score, I love the NSX. It's second only to my Benz touring car for miles driven.

It's not that I can't drive the cars fast, it's just that some don't feel as fast as I would think their relative speed would indicate.

By the way . . . can someone explain what an "incremental aspect ratio" is? I've never heard the term before and am sort of interested.

Oh, you are meaning that it is too soft and smooth? Well, that is a somewhat a coincidence. Many drivers do not like loud, pulpy engine sounds. But I like the sound of the NSX's engine. I also like the smoothness of the car, too. In fact, the NSX is the smoothest MR car in the game :trouble:

I think that there are two other contributing problems: The lack of ability to fool your inner ear (nothing like your inner child, it controls balance.)
And lack of detail on or beside the track - some of the courses may as well be black felt on green deserts.

Some point of references would be nice too. Like more signs on the tracks, more markings on the asphalt, more opposition, basically something to give you more depth perception. The problem is with big and wide tracks is you don't get that sense of depth perception to how far or close you are to the edge of the track, plus the asphalt textures looks to bland and the same so you can't judge by that. Also the aspect ratio is set to narrow and that's not good on a wide track. Try changing the aspect ratio maybe? Also the spectators in the grand stands are to far away too so you can't use them as reference points either. Hopefully GT4 gives us a greater sense of speed. I think it will judging by tracks like Grand Canyon and Citta Di Aria. The demo's there are nice. Narrow tracks close reference points, and the tracks are better textured.

Oh also a mininmal amount of blurriness would be wonderful too, at high to extreme speeds (this would be too intensive on the console if it was used overly, hence crappy resolution, less detail etc. to compensate). Also more wind noise, would rule. Gotta love hearing the roaring sound of wind ripping over your car over 300 km/h :)

I'd also add that IRL once you've been driving at high speed for a while (either while racing or on unrestricted roads) you get used to it, it's no longer special and normal speeds feel really slow.

Hence the urge to go faster, and thus, the reason why so many people die because of it.
It's like a hardcore, expensive, drug.

I thought the sense of speed was fine, but the test track was death. The test track in GT2 was a lot better with it's sense of speed. It had a lot more trees on the side, which gave a better sense of speed.

I've always thought the sensation of speed in GT3 was a bit scewed. It takes a JGTC car or better to feel like you're really flying. Most all of the street cars don't feel like you're doing 110mph when you're entering the corner. That's the biggest learning curve for new players.

comparing the sense of speed between GT3 and GT2, GT2 was perhapes too fast? and they over-compensated with GT3 maybe?

Famine raised a very good point. When you are on a wide track compared to a narrow street it feels like you are going a lot slower. However, i think the game still feels like you are going slower than what you should be. At 200 kph, it feels like you are going around 140 or so in my opninion.

One thing i did the other night as a test, was pull into the pits on Apricot raceway and parked as close as i could to the pit wall. Then i hammerd my EV0 5 down the entire pit straight too see how fast it felt driving next to a wall. It does feel a lot faster as compared to driving in the middle of a wide track, but still not that fast.

Great quote! For some reason, that seems to be something I would say.
