I just searched all of GTP, and was amazed to find absolutely nothing about Fear and Loathing...

I absolutely love this book, and the movie is damn good too.

So, who's seen the movie or read the book? Did you love it? Hate it? Do you like any of Thompson's other work?

Discuss.

Highlights: "Order some golf shoes, or else we'll never get out of this place alive."

"And that, I think, was the handle - -that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting - -on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark - -the place where the wave finally broke and rolled back. "

Yeah, I read the book in high school and again in college. Never did see the movie. Hunter S. Thompson is pretty cool, but I get tired of stoned ranting. When he's on, he's on, but when he incoherent, he's incoherent.

All in all I prefer PJ O'Rourke.

If you wanna check out the movie, it's on Bravo right now, that's what inspired this thread (assuming you're on the east coast of the US, which I believe you are). It's not quite as good as the book, but interesting nonetheless.

I read all of Thompsons books. He's a trip..literaly. I watched the movie last night..Johny Depp did a good thompson , he almost got the look just right.

Johnny Depp did do an amazing job at pulling off the part of Raoul Duke. I don't think I would have liked the movie as much had I not read the book. But just seeing some of the crazy scenes Thompson describes in the book (i.e. The scene with the lizards in the bar, the Circus casino) is amazing.

Apparently before the movie was made, Depp spent about a month living with Hunter Thompson...now that would be a trip.
