Seeing as it's not really related to Hungary anymore, I thought I would make a new thread.

BUDAPEST (Reuters) - Michael Schumacher visited injured Ferrari driver Felipe Massa in a Budapest hospital on Saturday, a day after starting testing for his return to Formula One racing with the Italian team.

The seven-times champion, who will replace the injured Brazilian while he recovers from a head injury suffered in a crash during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix a week ago, did not speak to reporters.

Former Ferrari boss Jean Todt, who is standing as a successor to Max Mosley as president of motorsport's world governing body the International Automobile Federation (FIA), also visited Massa and left without speaking to the media.

Dino Altmann, Massa's personal physician, said the Brazilian's recovery was on track and he was due to fly back to Brazil on Monday where he would continue the process.

Altmann declined to predict when Massa could get back to racing but dismissed speculation that he had suffered an eye injury which could slow his return.

"I'm not concerned about (the eye), it's okay, it shouldn't be a problem," Altmann told reporters outside the hospital. "I should be more concerned about his brain, not his sight. He's doing very well in all aspects of his recovery."

Good news, I really like Felipe, he's a cool guy. He deserves to be world champion some day...

Hopefully he'll be able to make the last couple of races this season. 👍

He looks like hes recovering quickly 👍 Wonder how long until the Doc's give him the go-ahead
 
It would be good to see him return at or before his home GP at Interlagos if that is still the last race of the season. 👍

Ferrari say that Felipe Massa’s recovery is continuing to go ‘very well’ after team principal Stefano Domenicali visited the Brazilian driver at his Sao Paulo home on Sunday.

Massa sustained fractures to his skull after his helmet was struck by a loose component from another car during qualifying for the last round of the championship in Hungary, just over three weeks ago.

"Felipe is in excellent form and his recovery is going very well!” Domenicali told Ferrari’s official website, after meeting with his injured driver. "I’m very happy about Felipe’s state.”

After undergoing emergency surgery, Massa spent just over a week in a Budapest hospital, the first few days of which he was kept in an artificially-induced coma. He was then flown back to Brazil where he underwent further tests before being discharged to recuperate at home.

"The medical checks which have been carried out over the last two weeks continue to be very encouraging,” added Domenicali. “Now it’s important to be patient and take one step at a time, without any hurry.”

No date has been set for Massa’s return to competition and his place at this weekend’s European Grand Prix will be taken by Ferrari test driver Luca Badoer.

It's sounding good. We just have to wait and see if he can return this year and if he does if he'll be back to speed.
 
I still doubt he will be back this year, skull fractures are quite serious and it would be best in my opinion for him to rest till next year and ensure he is ok rather than taking a risk.

If he didn't have his first child coming I would think he would be back as soon as the doctors would let him. Fatherhood can really change your perspective about what is really important in life.
 
I hope Massa is able to race at all next year and I hope Ferrari don't snub him in favour of other drivers because of this.

Meanwhile Badoer claims to be able to drive Monza blindfolded. I've heard he's allegedly set the fastest lap there during testing? Does anyone know if this is true?

Tests show Massa's eye is fully healed

Felipe Massa's vision has fully recovered after his Hungaroring accident, an examination in Paris has confirmed.

The Ferrari driver's left eye had been a particular cause for concern following the crash, which saw him suffer a fractured skull when a detached suspension component from Rubens Barrichello's Brawn car hit his helmet.

On Monday Massa intends to drive a Formula 1 car for the first time since the accident when he takes to the track in a 2007 Ferrari. He is undergoing FIA medical examinations today and tomorrow at the Pitie Salpetriere hospital in Paris to check the progress of his recovery, and the first of those confirmed that his eye was back to full health.

"The first outcomes are positive," said a Ferrari statement, "especially the ophthalmological exam confirmed that Felipe, who arrived with his personal doctor Dino Altmann, has recovered the functions of his left eye by 100 per cent."

The medical tests will continue on Saturday.

Massa has spent the last week working with Ferrari in Italy, completing two days of running in the team's simulator. He admitted yesterday that he is highly unlikely to be ready to race in Abu Dhabi as he had initially hoped, but is confident of being at full fitness in time for the 2010 season.

This is the bug question for me - physically it sounds like he will make a full recovery... but will he be able to drive the car as hard as he used to?

i think he will be able to he just might be alot more cautious when following damaged cars or going through debris fields. but every driver goes through crashes and if they cant get back on the horse after the first one its usually the end but seeing as hes gone a ways in his career and hes been in several crashes before. true none ever that life threatening but hes done his number to cars but i think he will be good but theres no real way to know until hes back in the car.

even though i dont believe the brawn car was damaged but how did that spring come out? i dont believe i ever found that our
