...the most valuable auction car in the world.
RM AUCTIONS IN ASSOCIATION WITH SOTHEBY'S SETS NEW WORLD AUCTION RECORD FOR RARE FERRARI AT MARANELLO, ITALY SALE

Maranello, Italy (May 18th, 2008) Car enthusiasts and Ferrari collectors from across the globe descended on Maranello, Italy this past weekend for RM Auctions' second annual "Ferrari Leggenda e Passione" auction event to witness a new auction record established for a 1961 Ferrari California Spyder formerly owned by actor James Coburn. The rare car exceeeded all expectations by selling for a world record auction price for a vintage car at auction in the amount of $10,894,900 U.S., surpassing the previous record set at Sotheby's Monaco in 1990 for a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO at $10,756,000 U.S.

The annual RM Ferrari auction held in association with Sotheby's, put under the hammer an unrivalled collection of historic Ferraris at the legendary home of Ferrari in Maranello, Italy. Among the attendees was one extremely well known Ferrari enthusiast, and British television and radio personality Chris Evans. Chris, accompanied by his wife, golf pro and writer Natasha Shishmanian, attended the Gala reception on Saturday, May 17th where he fell for the considerable charms of a black 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder. The following day, Chris made the successful bid for his dream machine, which will now take pride of place in his own celebrated collection and the honor of "the most valuable car sold in auction history."

surprised a "street" Ferrari is worth more than a "race" Ferrari. That is such a stunning car though. I saw one at the Galleria Ferrari last year.

I think that is such a beautiful machine. I swear the Royale went for more though...

Maybe it's just me, but I only tend to love Ferraris in red as much as I love Mercedes-Benz cars in silver (and sometimes black). That is quite a beautiful classic Ferrari. My favorite 250 is the 250 GTO, but this is a beautiful Ferrari.

Yeah of course everyone with half a brain knows the 250 GTO has traded hands for at LEAST 50% more courtesy of Sheehan and some Japanese nut back during Exotic Car Bubble I. Someone (Glickenhaus) said there's a 250 GTO "on the market" right now for 44 million... EUROS. Imagine that. The bubble is back ladies and gents. Anyone on here holding a 365 GTS 4? Sell sell sell.

BTW so proud the all-time car is perfect 100-point Ferrari all around... except for the Colorado "passed emissions" sticker on its windshield. I have one of those too! Further proving Colorado is Italian for "possesses more incredible Ferraris than any other state."

Yeah I was pretty sure that I remembered 250 GTOs going for more than 10.7M$. They are truly spectacular machines in person, no doubt about that at all.

But, was the 250 GTO being sold through an auction?

This site says the Royale went for £4.87 million, which I am guessing is British pounds. And a converter says that translates to $9,489,979.

Hmmm, interesting. Not completely surprising, the 250 in general is the most-desired Ferrari, no? Not that I'd pay that much, well, if I had the money maybe... But probably not.

A beautiful car, but the 1961 Ferraris did not seem to be rare transitional models... perhaps the bidder got a bit passionate; the car looks as if it could have gone easily for about 50-60% less. An original 250 Testa Rossa went for $6 million U.S. However, yes, it is a spyder, and those tend to go for much more.

That is a HUGE sum of money for any car. Not my kind of crazy that's for sure.

A Ferrari.... Bought by a guy called Chris.... Is there something you're not telling us, ferrari_chris?

ferrari_chris = Chris Moyles?

Yes, I do know who he is.

No quantity of finely engineered vintage Ferrari can possibly make Chris Evans looks more attractive.

Though, he has some peculiar luck with the ladies.

That's probably down to the fact that he has enough disposable income that he can spend 5.5 million qud on a car.

YES!!!

A 250LM or P4 or GTO at auction in today's market would bring much more than that.

What cost $10,756,000 in 1990 would cost $17,772,697.78 in 2007, adjusted for inflation.

This is a California SWB, which is traditionally one of the most desirable of all Ferrari's ever. Not the most, but damned close. Helping is the fact that it is only a dozen cars rarer than a 250GTO.
