I tried both of these on the Nurburgring GP track today. The 458 has good grip and very little body roll in corners, but a fair bit of understeer. I think I did a 2min 15.4 with it, but only after I added some rear brake bias for the car to turn how I wanted.

Then I tried to beat that time with the MP4-12C in arcade mode. I kept making small mistakes so I only did a 2min 16.3 or something, but despite that the Mclaren feels more fun to drive IMO. The front suspension feels softer than that on the Ferrari, so it has an oversteer balance on the entry to corners that I really, really like. :) I'll try beating the 458 time again tomorrow.

So which car do you think is better?

You can tune the Mclaren to around 880 hp, while the 458 can be churned up to around 750 hp.

Mclaren seems the more fun car to drive though, and the interior is just fantastic.

So for me, the Mclaren is the better car.

Just can't wait for the rumored GT3 and GT2 versions of the car to be unleashed on the track.

Edit: A big plus is you don't have to worry about the Mclaren turning on fire like the 458.👍

I drove the Mclaren in the final licence test and the thing was incredible, the 458 was a beautiful car but it didnt impress me in the same way as far as driving performance goes.

Don't know if one could really say that one can is BETTER than the other....but as a ferrari fan,i love the 458 more!!

Both cars handle a bit different and have different engine caracters, for me pesonally the body of the Ferrari looks absolutaly stunning and the Mclarens doesn't....and i like the high revving V8 of the Ferrari more...

But if you ask me wich car is better...????...

Its more a question of emotion if you ask me...both cars are fantastic in their own specific ways...

spy.

I love em both, i just got a mp4 today and took it for a few laps around nurburg, and took some adjustments, got it sitting at 790some hp wo a turbo, but bit of suspension work and it was a very fun car to drive, very stable under acceleration and braking.

Only thing that bugs me about the mp4 is from certain angles it looks like an f430 :P, a car i never liked the styling of. But from other angles it looks beautiful.

Italia is drop dead gorgeous tho, i mean it just looks mean period. And it drives amazingly well even if you ramp it up a bit and keep stock suspension on it is a very solid nice handling car, where the mp4 i had to put custom suspension on cause the default suspension just fell apart just shy of 800hp.

Both great cars i am a ferrari guy but i have loved mclaren cars from all the way back to f1 which is still one of the most amazing looking cars ever made and it is what 20 years old now?

I love my 458.. I probably will buy a McClaren later on.. just cause I know it is awesome too, but tbh it doesn't matter which is better. It's about which one is more fun to drive :D

I have both cars, have extensively driven them, and I much prefer the 458. The MP4 is a nightmare to drive. While the 458 has understeer, it can easily be tuned to my preference in handling, whereas the MP4 doesn't respond well to any tuning, and thus is generally a horrible car. Although it does destroy the British Lightweight championship.

I bought the 458 and while it's pretty, I think the MP4-12c is a better car. Even stock, the McLaren felt a lot better.

My favourite car of all time is the McLaren F1. The ultimate road-going car, and considering its nearly 20 years old, I think it has aged very well.
Im not a Ferrari fan myself, and I have to say though the 458 is an awsome car. The normally aspirated V8 is astonishing. The McLaren MP4-12C although I hate to say, is a dissapointment in my opinion. The car just seems to be less rigid. The car is tail happy, but its kinda more annoying rather than fun in a strange way. I mean the car is great in many ways, the active aero provides butt clenching deacceleration capabilities. Its just hard not to compare it against the Ferrari, though.
They are both awsome cars. Well just have to wait till next year when they finally can do a comparison in REAL life.

So true.
The F1 is fantastic in the game (as well as real life of course!), yet the MP4 feels so dissapointing. I thought it would be a serious contender to the 458, but it seems to be a little more boring :grumpy: .
I'm particularly annoyed by the sound of the car. Yes it is just a turbo'd V8, but at least make it interesting to listen to! I hope it sounds better in real life.

The MP4 was my workhorse up to level 23. I still really like the car, but even with a lot of tuning experimentation I was never able to get rid of its understeering tendencies. I think it's a fantastic car up to the point where you have to deal with actual racecars, ie. Like the Wind. It just doesn't have that kind of steering and acceleration. I used the Furai for that event and haven't really used the MP4 since.

Granted, I have the Formula GT now... :)

It took me about 15 minutes of test and tune to set the suspension to get the MP4 to oversteer slightly. It was very easy to tune. The car is still balanced with over 800+ hp.

I still can't get the Furai tuned properly... I don't know why I can't get rid of the snap oversteer with it.

I'm debating which one of these cars to buy as my next vehicle, as well as the R8 5.2, SLS AMG, and the GT-R Vspec. What are your settings for the MP4? and can it get a front splitter in GT auto?

Also I used these settings on my furai, and found it to be just about the most sublime car I've ever driven https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=136368#post4229974

One big plus of the McLaren MP4-12C is the on dash odometer and trip meter actually work. :D

How come a lot of people say the MP4 is understeery?

If anything it drives on rails when I drive it. Then again I'm using a controller and not a steering wheel.

I've only driven both of them stock and I definitely prefer the MP4-12C. The 458 has a neutral-to-understeer balance unless you provoke it, which makes it fun to chuck around, but for really pressing on the I find the 12C's controlable oversteer more fun and more effective. It's just so easy to get the tail sliding exactly the way you want it. In quick corners the front of the 458 starts to drift wide, but the 12C's tail just slides a tiny bit to help you round and let you carry more speed through.

I've no idea what they're like tuned. I'd guess the 458 would be able to take more power before requiring suspension tuning because of its more neutral balance, but the 12C is lighter, more powerful and has a lower CoG, so should ultimately be faster. But once you start getting that far you're really talking about how good your tuning is, not how good the cars Ferrari and McLaren made are.

I wouldn't buy the R8 5.2 since you can win it. I've driven the SLS AMG in arcade mode it's a nice vehicle that is easy to drive. I haven't tried the GTR Vspec yet, but I've avoided all of the Skylines since there are so many of them.

The rear will still get tail happy if you're not careful on the throttle, but on long corners and during deceleration, the car is handles great.

I like both cars but the MP4-12 is definitely faster. If you take both cars stock and try to post a quick lap on any circuit, the McLaren will have the quicker time. If you fully upgrade both cars and optimize their performance levels and settings, the gap becomes even wider.

My vote is for the 458, when it's fully modded it's better than a fully modded McLaren. You can only add a spoiler to the McLaren if i'm not mistaken, where as you can add the full kit to the ferrari giving it extra downforce.

As standard though the McLaren is a very fun car to drive.

Have the people voting actually driven both cars stock as well as fully modded? I think the poll results would be different if that were the case.

I have both, and the Mclaren is much faster after being fully upgraded. And I think lighter also.

Mclaren? Never for me. I bleed Scuderia Rosso!

That's normal ;)

Personally I find the 458 quite ugly and prefer the 430 Scuderia. Between either of those and the MP4 though, gotta go with the Brits on this one. Hard to beat a Mclaren in bright competition orange. On a more objective note, I find the 458 understeers to much for me compared to the Mclaren.
