Ferrari is to make a very limited-run model called 600 GTO, according to reports on the 'net this week. This is said to be based on the 599 GTB Fiorano, but with carbonfibre roof and bodypanels, and other measures to reduce weight by 285kg, lower suspension and a lower centre of gravity, revised aerodynamics for greater downforce, and modified styling. Reports are divided as yet as to whether further race-ready mods include the deletion of air conditioning and sound system, and the fitment of lighter-weight seats in place of the standard leather chairs; some sources say that the weight reduction has been achieved without losing any mod cons.

The 600 GTO has been commissioned by an American customer, thought to be planning to revive the dealer-founded Ferrari North American Race Team (NART) which raced between 1958-82, and to start an owners' championship. Three cars are said to be under construction, and may be revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show this autumn.

Enzo like you mean, the Enzo did it before the SLR and it's the Enzo that's influenced this.

This is going to be awesome when we all get so see them on Top Gear or Best Motoring (assuming they actually can get them on the show). :ouch:

None the less, this definately sounds like it will be running for top honors as the best GT car in the world. 👍
I'm glad to see someone is giving the SLR compeition (and a lightweight competitor at that!). :sly:

I was initially thinking that 285kg is quite a lot to have removed from a Ferrari, but then I remembered that Ferrari doesn't really do lightweight cars anymore. Given that much praise was heaped on the 599GTB, losing nearly 600 lbs should make it truly extraordinary.

I must be losing my mind.
Wasn't there a company like Zagato who planned to built a 250-GTO-like vehicle based on the 599?

It shouldn't really be called a GTO if it isn't built as a homologation model.

They should call it the 599 GTLeggero.

Front makes me thing of the Green Goblin... If they take out that much weight and "maybe" add more power, this thing will rip.

Pistonheads.com are showing a leaked CAD image of the body. Doesn't look all that different to the standard 599 to me. :indiff:

Yes, i understand that  - i just thought, considering what Pininfarina showed what could be done with that P4/5 based on an Enzo, they might have stretched the original base car a little further.

...and considering that the original 250 GTO looked quite different (and a great deal better!) from the 250 GT SWB on which it's based, that expectation is quite reasonable.

From what I can see, this will undoubtedly be a great addition to Ferrari's more racetrack-inspired history. The weight loss, in my opinion, is a pleasant surprise but if they were to truly give it a good run I'd appeal for the air-conditioning and sound system to be stripped, as well as leightweight race seats.
