Ferrari To Leave Formula 1?

"We cannot do sports-car racing and Formula One," says di Montezemolo. "It's not possible."

To me that says the announcement at Le Mans tomorrow morning is more likely to be from HPD/Honda.

I can't see Ferrari quiting F1 with the huge slice of the financial pie they're guaranteed every year.

Ferrari are the only team who are paid to be in Formula 1 and they only make road cars to finance the racing. They're alone in that out of the manufacturer racers.

I'll translate this story for you;

Luca "De Lizard" said today "I donna support Eco Technology, it's irrelevANTa! I weell use the threat of a Ferrari a leavin F1 for de sporta carrrrs to manipulate my specific interests in the sport".*

Sadly I've just realised that the Sportscar project might be all farts and whispers, its value to De Lizard as a bargaining tool in F1 has become clear. Damn.

* I know, more Stavros than anything...

EDIT: Post #4000 :D

Should add this:

***While a senior-level Ferrari source had confirmed an announcement from the Italian manufacturer was due to take place at Le Mans this weekend, it’s understood those plans have been delayed. The ACO has stated no LMP1 manufacturer announcement is scheduled, while the organizers are in talks with two to three candidates for a possible Garage 56 entry in 2015. Ferrari, meanwhile, has yet to formally comment on its widely believed LMP1 factory program.

:( shame that

I just hope they leave F1! It can finally be a wake up call and it might bring the change that is heavily needed.

Ferrari back in LMP would be great. Alonso and Kimi sharing an endurance seat... Could become a nice show :)

My take on it is Ferrari will finance and supply engines for a dallara built LMP1 car run by a privateer team or teams.

Being in F1 has been integral to them shifting road cars for basically most of their history. I very much doubt they would quit it however badly they are doing.

F1 is sparse enough as it is, we should be running with like 3-4 more teams.

I just saw from those small news on the bottom of the screen "Presidente da Ferrari admite abandonar Fórmula 1" which translated means "Ferrari's President admits to leave Formula 1". So, even in a major news channel in my country that thing is flying by.

Leaving Formula 1 is Luca's favorite threat to make. He has done it half a dozen times, and has never come close to making good on it. Even the breakaway series in 2009 was an empty threat.

Given the choice between Formula 1 and the WEC, Ferrari will pick Formula 1. Luca's comments may be interpreted as "we are leaving Formula 1 for the WEC", but they could just as easily be interpreted as "we are not going to the WEC". The latter probably makes more sense, given the rumours of a return to sports car racing.

They won't, it's the pinnacle of Euro road racing. And as I said, they get paid to do it.

Luca's problem is with hybrids it seems, his sporting management has been less than excellent (in my opinion) over the years and he doesn't see the tech in F1 as aiding road cars.

Ferrari aren't interested in 1.6 engines, particularly given the resurgence in the American market which traditionally favours much larger engines. I know there are many American users here who love the idea that the current 1.6 engine can convert 800bhp at a given max flow but I suspect that the bulk of Americans simply aren't interested.

The complaints about noise are also not helpful, people don't seem to understand how energy or fuel actually work. The Lizard included. :D

"No replacement for displacement" used to be the saying. Clearly not true.

EDIT: Tree'd as succinctly as ever by @prisonermonkeys :)

I could perhaps see Ferrari making the 059/3 engine available on a customer supply basis, as the WEC rules have been opened up to allow Formula 1 engines. That would offset the cost and given them the chance to develop it. There's a glut of privateer chassis out there, and they could enter LMP1-L.

Should this thread be merged with the "Ferrari Veil Grows Thinner" thread? They seem to be two sides of effectively the same topic; Ferrari may switch to sportscars from F1.

I believe Ferrari may run a brand in sportscars but cannot conceive of a genuine reason for them to leave F1, incidentally :)

There's only two reasons for Ferrari to leave F1: Di Montezemolo throws his toys out of the pram, or there are no other teams left to race against.

If F1 is unprofitable to be in, pretty much every other team will feel the pinch before Ferrari does. Their special deal means that they do pretty OK out of the whole thing.

Reading the article again, it seems the author thinks Luca will have Ferrari quit Formula 1 for sports cars because he's sick of hybrids.

But if he does it, he's still going to find hybrids.

Not to mention his firm's newest hypercar is, drumroll please, a hybrid.
