So, I'm sure I could find this out online with some google searching, but with the knowledge that I currently have, something came across me today when I was talking about the 911 and how Porsche always seems to get overlooked by people who are more interested in the legendary Ferrari and Lamborghini... Ferrari has actually been around for almost half the time that most of the German manufacturers have been, and although no brand has been more popular and successful in the field of motorsports, why is it that Ferrari is always referred to as the prancing horse when to me its quite obvious that Porsche had the prancing horse first... any answers?

ps feel free to delete this after someone answers

My guess is because Ferrari's logo revolves around the word, "Scuderia" & that Enzo decided on a specific logo of a horse to display that meaning. Meanwhile, Porsche is not so much the horse, but a mix of Stuttgart's coat of arms & the Kingdom of Wurttemburg.

In short, Porsche's is more about historic Germany whilst Ferrari's is a tribute to a fallen pilot & that "Scuderia" means a stable of racing horses.

Thanks, its really quite strange when i look at both logos newt to each other, the horses look so so similar. I mean the only real difference is that the Ferrari horse is slightly more upright and the maine on the Porsche one seems to be a bit more messy, other than that it looks like Enzo just decided to take that horse and throw it over some yellow and italian colors.

That's putting it a little too simply... lol

On June 17, 1923, Enzo Ferrari won a race at the Savio track in Ravenna where he met the Countess Paolina, mother of Count Francesco Baracca, an ace of the Italian air force and national hero of World War I, who used to paint a horse on the side of his planes. The Countess asked Enzo to use this horse on his cars, suggesting that it would bring him good luck. The original "prancing horse" on Baracca's airplane was painted in red on a white cloud-like shape, but Ferrari chose to have the horse in black (as it had been painted as a sign of grief on Baracca's squadron planes after the pilot was killed in action) and he added a canary yellow background as this is the color of the city of Modena, his birthplace. The Ferrari horse was, from the very beginning, markedly different from the Baracca horse in most details, the most noticeable being the tail that in the original Baracca version was pointing downward.
