...why do you think it's so popular.

When Square released that PS3 demo of the intro to FFVII, the gaming community went nutz over the possibility of a remake. Not to mention FFVII is theonly FF game with it's one movie.

Seriously, almost every gamer I've ever known is borderline obsessed with this game(including me :) ). I'm just wondering why you think it's so popular. It's certainly not the best looking FF game. So what's the great appeal? The characters, materia, summons or just the first 3D FF game?

What do you all think?
 
It was probably many people's first FF game so it's special.
 
It was a perfect package (aside from graphics if you look at them now.)

The story had it's ups and down, the character development was precise to the point where the player knew the characters intimately. Remember Aeris? I have quite a few friends that cried over that death scene, and they were guys!

The Materia system is my favorite magic equip system, easy to use, yet ingenously integrated into the game. Screw the "this character has this type of skill". Honestly, as true to life that may be, I simply didn't like the character that often had the skill I needed.

One thing that FF7 had a cut above the rest was the villain. Instead of showing Sephiroth as a random villain that wanted to take over the world, they give him a whole story for himself to make the player empathise with him. A seriously misguided man who would stop at nothing, yet is controlled by Jenova.

Oh. And giant swords. :)
 
Final Fantasy VII is very, very, very overrated. I would know, I used to be one of the fanboys back in middle school.

Sure, it's a great game, excellent even, but it isn't some godly masterpiece.
