Finally upgrading to a One-x - package looks worn | thoughts?XBOne

So I'm super-excited - "the machine" arrives tomorrow but the guy sent me photos when I asked for the manufacturing date aaannndd.... the packing looks a bit worn. It appears the model was manufactured and packed in the 3rd week of 2018 - am I reading that correctly? Or is it March, 2018?

Anyhoos, photos attached.

Thoughts? Cause for concern?

If I received a device like this with a dent like that in the box at work, I'd call the supplier to ask them to replace it because that's definitely been dropped. The last time I did receive a box like that, back in January, it was a monitor and the monitor inside was completely smashed...

@neema_t
Well, luckily, it's an xbox console with styrofoam padding on both sides, which I believe should provide adequate padding and protection from physical shock, you reckon?

He doesn't have any other consoles at the moment - I did discuss a refund and he said I'd have to forego the downpayment.

Hard to say if it's been dropped or just handled carelessly because he say's it's being brought in from overseas through personal luggage.

for arguments' sake, let's say if it has been dropped - don't you think MS packs it with enough protection to prevent internal damage - because, well, mishaps happen during shipping and 'handling' right?

P.S: He said many items that he asks 'his guy' to bring in can sometimes look slightly creased around the corners or the packing can take a little beating. It's normal he says and showed me photos of some of the other goods he had brought in.

Well, now that i think about it, if he were selling dodgy goods, I don;t think he would have sent me those photos, especially not that creased corner!

@Speedster911 First of all, no amount of packing can outright prevent all damage, just reduce the odds and therefore cut down on the rate of damaged goods arriving with customers. Secondly, as far as I know it's probably not normally shipped in the retail packaging, it (the retail box, I mean) would probably be packaged in a significantly more robust box for shipping which provides even more protection.

On the one hand, it doesn't look that bad. On the other hand, any expensive, heavy piece of consumer electronics being dropped is a cause for concern. Maybe it hasn't even been dropped but that to me looks like it was then hit the floor corner first and probably flopped down with a substantial thud.

@neema_t

As I said this was not sent in the shipping packaging and got brought in directly with someone's personal luggage. He showed me shots of other consoles and game hardware that may have been dropped - had a corner creased e.g. - and said he had sold them and never got complaints.

Well, yes, it certainly doesn't look that bad, lol! I have seen half a dozen unboxing vids by now and almost all showed minor signs of discoloration, scuffs and dings... one box, in fact, in one or two of the vids, I noticed how the box was creased around the corner.

You don't think shoving the box in along with personal luggage or shuffling it around a cabin full of other stuff might have caused that crease?

All in all, he tells me it's common for packaging to take a bit of a beating and no one's ever complained. I actually trust the guy - been dealing with for years - and have never had issues with stuff I brought from him. However, I slightly worn out box was a first! I think the quality is certainly not as good as the original xbox ones that had double padding on the outside.

Sounds like you've made your mind up!

It's not about making my mind up - I don't have a choice really. If I cancel the order, he won't refund the downpaymen - as he says he has already paid the guy in full. He doesn't have any more units lying around. So I'm taking a leap of fate on this on.

i'm sure MS takes into account the likelihood of mishaps - it's a well built machine - I'm sure it can take a bit of 'accidental beating' if it had to!

@Speedster911 Did you get a good deal ? You might have got lucky and it could have been crushed by something else, so fingers crossed. If it is damaged will he give you your money back ? If I was in your position I would want to know this.

I bought mine second hand and after showing me it working playing several games, just as I was handing over the money the guy says, 'if it does go wrong I don't want you coming back' !! I asked him why it should go wrong, he couldn't answer. I almost walked away but took a punt and touch wood its been fine so far, (1 year).

I wouldn't take a new item with a box in that condition, especially one which has sensitive electronics but if it's a one on one purchase as stated then you won't have much recourse as you didn't buy it from a retailer. I don't know if you would even have a warranty if it did go wrong down the line.
