Does anyone know where I can find the horsepower/tourqe numbers and general statistics for some of the more common, older engines? Finding power numbers for big, grizzly V8's in older cars is easy, but surely someone documents the power numbers and stats (like Compression Ratios, etc) of the less powerful, more common engines. Specifically, I'm looking for all the stats I can find on my 1986-1992 3.8L Oldsmobile V6. I've tried google, but I couldn't find any for this more common engine. I found a site with a lot of Oldsmobile Engine stats, but the smallest engine they had was a 260ci. They didn't have the 232... :grumpy:

I would just say ask M5. I would bet that some how some way he knows whatever it that you want to know.

Also can I have the website :D.

As far as I know the new-for-'86 Eighty Eight used a version of the 3800 V6 with Sequential Fuel Injection known by RPO code LG3. Power was rated at 150hp @ 4400rpm and torque was rated at 210ft-lbs @ 2800rpm. The eighth character in the VIN should be a 3.

In '88 GM added a revised version, known by RPO code LN3. It made 165hp @ 4400rpm and 220ft-lbs at 2800rpm. The eighth character of the VIN should be C.

The LG3 was dropped sometime in the late '80s, as far as I know. When the Eighty Eight was redesigned for 1992, the LN3 was replaced with yet another revision of the 3800, L27, which made 170hp and 200ft-lbs of torque. The eighth character of the VIN should be an L (I think...). For 1993 torque jumped to 225ft-lbs.

In 1995 the base engine was replaced with the 3800 Series II, which made 205hp and 230ft-lbs of torque. The supercharged 3800 Series I was offered as an option in 1995, making 225hp and 275ft-lbs of torque, and was replaced the following year by the supercharged 3800 Series II, which made 240hp and 280ft-lbs of torque.

Sweet, thanks for that info. The 8th number in my VIN is a C, so looks like I have the revised 3800 from 1988. How did you find this all out? Do you have a source, or is it just from experience?

So, those numbers make sense, then, since My 0-60 time (~11s) is about the same as my family's Malibu which has 150 hp @4800 rpm/180 lb-ft @3200 rpm and the 0-60 times are very similar.

The whole 8th VIN digit thing is a guessing game - I used to think the eighth digit was foolproof, but it's become less and less so. These days, I only quote seven digits unless the eighth is deciding.

If you need help with other engines, Firebird is clearly competent with the domestics and I'd like to think I can help to some degree too - I've committed to memory pretty much everything in the last six years and can easily check anything since 1980.
