My home is in Conway about 35 miles northwest of where I work in Little Rock. Our local newspaper has a short read

Explosion rocks plant at Conway, area evacuated
CONWAY, Ark.

An explosion rocked a chemical plant in Conway on Tuesday, forcing emergency workers to evacuate parts of an industrial park and a nearby daycare center.

"There were some early reports of people with burns but I am not sure of their status," said Conway Police Lt. Chip Stokes.

The explosion occurred at Detco Industries, on the city's south side, near an airport that was shut down temporarily. The state Emergency Management Department said the company makes chemicals for use in industrial maintenance operations.

Black smoke rising from the site could be seen as far away as Little Rock, 30 miles away. The plume was being carried southward on a light north wind.

Stokes said the explosion occurred about 11 a.m. Emergency workers evacuated buildings within a half-mile, including a day-care center.

Stokes there a number of unknown chemicals in the building and that emergency workers were concerned about the possibility of another explosion. Another dozen or so plants are nearby.

"We've got a thick black smoke coming out of the building," Stokes said.

And I've taken pictures from where I am.

The company was 'Detco'. Interesting I think. They make explosives.

Here is their website. Their quote ... Our Vision ... A Safe Environment

EDIT: Correction, they make chemicals, which is the big concern, as it drifts through the air over the entire city.

I obviously care more about this than the rest of you do. But I'm going to keep posting on it (:

This I thought was funny.
Smoke inhalation symptoms

Log Cabin Democrat

Symptoms of smoke inhalation from the Detco fire are shortness of breath, sore throat and coughing up black soot, according to Beth Yandell, emergency room director at Conway Regional Medical Center.

If victims have those symptoms they most likely were exposed to the smoke for a long time.

Chemicals of the type at the Detco plant are dissipated by fire, so victims will have typical smoke-inhalation symptoms, not chemical reactions, Yandell said.

By 2 p.m., eight patients had walked into the emergency room; five were treated and released, according to hospital spokesman Lori Ross.

Shortly after the explosion, two patients were taken by helicopter, one to the burn unit at Children's Hospital and one to Baptist Medical Center. Several victims were taken directly to Little Rock from the scene.

Be glad it wasn't a giant green cloud escaping from the chemical plant...

We had to be evacuated from our neighborhood in Indianapolis years ago because of a gas leak at a gas plant a few blocks away. A giant green gas cloud had formed over the area. It was quite a fun day...

Hmm, interesting. Hope everything turns out cool for everybody in Conway. Closest thing I've experienced to that is a bomb threat in 5th grade. We got to go home early, although we had to leave all our stuff in the school so luckily my mom was home early and let me in. (House keys were in the school obviously)

No way ... that is somehow not the proper course of action. Can you imagine how much stuff could have been stolen? And if your house keys were stolen? Takes the bomb threat issue to a new level.

That's pretty awesome. Sorry, but I find this really interesting. That's a huge smoke ploom by the way. How'd you like to look up at the sky to find it to bea dark greyish black color ona nice blue day?

It was rather weird. Someone at my office said "I heard you can see it from here" so I walked to a window and sure enough there it was. It was really erie at first. Then I calmed down and grabbed a camera (:

Or a Three Mile Island or a Tokaimura... :D

The worst two incidents like this I ever heard of were when a NASA-funded solid fuel factory went up (and registered a 7 on the Richter scale), and when petrol leaked into the sewers of a suburb of a town in Peru (could have been Lima... I don't recall) and blew up 30 blocks.

Oh my gosh. Loud. You don't know how hard I just started laughing. I have tears coming out of my eyes.

It appears the fires were still burning just a couple hours ago. Hopefully they've got it all out by now, but what a day!

Well, your fires covered a much larger area and endangered thousands of lives. They still haven't said, but I believe one man died and two or three were wounded. Others have smoke damage. It was one small warehouse and LOTS of flame and smoke.

It just freaked me out to look out that way and see a huge line of smoke coming from my town.

Ha ha, I used to say that too ...

Actually, we've got some decent things going on. Just nothing to go spouting all over the place. We have one of three school bus manufacturers in the US. Also Virco calls our town home - they make school level furnature and such. A big data company, Acxiom, was started here and still has its main data center in Conway - grown to world wide status and offices in major cities around the nation and world. Kimberly-Clark, manufacturer of femenine higene products is here. As for the state of Arkansas, our high school is consistantly in the top 3 in nearly every sporting event and our students compete nation wide in academic studies.

But we only make CNN when a dumbass blows his warehouse up.
